Stretford-end.com is a website that offers a place where Reds can discuss current issues, transfer gossip, tactics and anything to do with Manchester United. In the four years that we have been running we have had some great contributors and excellent discussions. Below is a superb account from Daniel, a match going Red for over twenty five years, on his first United match back in 1986 against our next opponents in the FA Cup – Southampton. Ron Atkinson was still manager and Fergie was two months away from the United hotseat. I’m sure you’ll enjoy Dan’s superb account of his first United match and Manchester United in the 80s.

Sir Alex Ferguson comes second in coach of the decade

Posted on January 11, 2011  by Stretford-end  in Arsenal, Man United, Managers, Press   47 Comments »

Ferguson and Wenger

I raised an eyebrow when I read the Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger was voted coach of the decade ahead of Sir Alex Ferguson and Jose Mourinho. This doesn’t come from a person who doesn’t respect what Arsene Wenger has done for the North London club, but a sheer observation at how trophy shy the Emirates cabinet is compared to that of Old Trafford, Stamford Bridge and the San Siro.

Wenger has helped improve English football and Arsenal massively whilst incorporating an impressive brand of football – but can a manager who hasn’t won anything since 2005 be considered manager of the decade?

Today’s Stretty Stories will include today’s news plus some of the top stories from the weekend.

Manchester United vs. Liverpool FA Cup: Talking Points

Posted on January 09, 2011  by Stretford-end  in FA Cup, Liverpool, Man United, Match Reports   7 Comments »

Gerrard Red Card
Our usual readers will be accustomed to an in depth match report that address key action points from start to finish – however we going to try a slightly different route and look at some talking points of the game, with a brief conclusion at the end of the post. We hope that some of our talking points will have you debating openly about key incidents and what your opinion is. We welcome an open debate but will not tolerate insults that aren’t relevant to the topic in question. If you disagree with anything that is written here, we would love to hear about it in the comments box below.

So to the match, Kenny Dalglish returned to the Liverpool hotseat for the first time in twenty years but things couldn’t have got off to a worst start with Ryan Giggs converting a second minute penalty – which proved to be the only goal of the game. Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard was sent off half way through the first half for a two footed lunge on Michael Carrick, however United failed to convert any more chances and make their numerical advantage pay off. United have been drawn away against Southampton in the 4th round.

Gary Neville set to retire at the end of the season?

Posted on January 08, 2011  by Stretford-end  in Legends, Man United, Man United News, Players   2 Comments »

Gary Neville
Reports are suggesting the Gary Neville is set to retire at the end of the season. Neville hasn’t been a regular in the side since his 2007 injury in a match against Bolton Wanderers. Wes Brown, John O’Shea and more recently Brazilian Rafael have all featured ahead of United’s former captain. Neville has featured in both away wins so far this season, however was lucky to remain on the pitch in both matches.

Neville has reportedly, according to Goal.com, told friends he does not want to play for another club and would like to take on a coaching role at Old Trafford after he ends his 19-year playing career in the summer.

Berbatov

As if the one game at Old Trafford this season against Liverpool wasn’t dramatic enough; a match set to bring back memories from 98/99 has been thrown up. It’s Liverpool and it’s the third round of The FA Cup.

FA Cup
Hope you’re all doing well after yesterday’s fantastic results. One of our stories is, of course, that United were the big winners on a night when they didn’t even kick a ball. Also in the news, Sir Alex Ferguson wants to win the FA Cup, Old Trafford may be Roy Hodgson’s last stand, and Javier Hernandez is enjoying life at Old Trafford.

Antonio Valencia
Silly season is in full swing, but news has remained surprisingly quiet around Old Trafford. No new speculation to report. Matt James has been recalled from his loan at Preston North End, Kiko Macheda is looking forward to his loan, and Nani wants to be invincible. The big news today is not in the papers though; a certain Ecuadorian winger has reached an important milestone on his return from a long-term injury.

Tactical view – Fletcher and wide play key to United beating Stoke

Posted on January 04, 2011  by nameonthetrophy  in Doron, Man United, Match Reports, Premier League, Stoke City, Tactics   No Comments »

Fletcher

Despite as Yolkie describes in his match report a “laboured” win over Stoke for me there were two key reasons why United won. Firstly, Darren Fletcher and secondly United’s successful wide play.

Manchester United 2-1 Stoke City

Nani

United laboured their way to three points – not for the first time – against Stoke, with Nani – probably not for the last time – the key man, scoring and assisting one. Chicharito returned the favour to his teammate, having being selected to give Wayne Rooney a rest, and although Sir Alex Ferguson will surely not be convinced by the manner in which this result was achieved, he will naturally be delighted he was able to preserve the energy of those he was intending to before the weekend.
