Danny Welbeck versus Everton

Manchester United notched up their second clean sheet away from home in the Premier League with a 1-0 victory over Everton. Javier Hernandez scored the only goal of the game, as he did in the victory over Everton last April, following a superb cross from Evra on the left hand side. Sir Alex Ferguson made a number of changes following the 6-1 defeat at the hands of Manchester City last weekend.

Here we discuss the talking points of Manchester United’s 1-0 win over Everton.

The clash of the top two was the high scoring affair many feared it wouldn’t be, however if your colour is red then it was one gloomy afternoon. United lined up in a bold 4-4-2 without captain Vidic and were matching City on the pitch until Jonny Evans was sent off early in the second half. City went on to win and thrash United 6-1, not that the scoreline truly reflects the pattern of the game. Here we discuss the talking points from the match and invite both United and City fans to join in the discussion.

Manchester’s elite clubs clash for the second time this season on Sunday. City are for a change above United heading into the game that’s already being dubbed in some quarters as a ‘title decider’. United are looking to regain top spot and inflict a first league defeat of the season upon City.

After a tough weekend’s draw at Liverpool, United fly out to Romania to play Champions League newcomers, Otelul Galati. Aside from being new to the competition, they’re new to Man United and very much new to most fans (myself inclusive). In order to get some background information about the team, we’ve spoken to Radu Baicu, a scout and journalist based in Romania. Here’s what he had to say…

There was a typical Fergie surprise when the teams were announced before kick off – no Rooney, Nani, Hernandez or Anderson were starting. Instead, Jones played in midfield for the first time and Welbeck was asked to play up front alone. Steven Gerrard made his first start in 7 months for Liverpool and his goal saw them take the lead midway through the second half. Hernandez’s equaliser with nine minutes to go meant the sides had to settle for a point each. Here we discuss some of the key talking points from the game and welcome discussion from both United and Liverpool fans.

United’s midfield the key in trip to Anfield

United's midfield the key in trip to Anfield

Darren Fletcher

Over the years United and Liverpool can boast about some of the most iconic midfielders this country is lucky enough to have ever seen. From Robson to Keane for United and Souness to Gerrard for Liverpool, there have been some epic clashes in the centre of the park. The match at Anfield will mark the 183rd time the two sides have met but United haven’t picked up a victory (at Anfield) since the 1-0 win in the December of 2007 (scored by Carlos Tevez of all people). In the time since that victory United have lost 2-1 in 08/09, 2-0 in 09/10 and 3-1 last season. Last season, United looked extremely pedestrian in the middle of the midfield, with Scholes and Carrick – this time around, I expect Ferguson to look for energy and drive in Fletcher and Anderson.

Please note: this is an old post that has been updated so the tables at the bottom are now visible following the website redesign

Come May, the only number that mattered was 19. A record breaking Scouse-busting 19. However, in order to climb to the highest perch it’s taken a monumental team effort. To what extent is this represented by individual performance statistics though? Who, according to the numbers has been the stand out performer and who away from home has been a bad luck charm when included?!
