The eyes of the footballing world were on Old Trafford last night as United hosted Real Madrid in the second leg of the last 16 in the Champions League. With the tie finely poised after the first leg, Fergie had fans guessing his starting line up for days in advance, particularly given Jones’ injury. What followed couldn’t have been more dramatic and cruel but also seems to have brought out the best in fans and players. As ever, we welcome comments from both sets of fans.

Cristiano Ronaldo takes on Wayne Rooney as Manchester United draw 1-1 with Real Madrid

It was billed by Jose Mourinho as the game the “world was waiting for”, and it didn’t disappoint. Manchester United drew 1-1 with Real Madrid in the Bernanbeu after Danny Welbeck put the visitors in the lead with a headed goal from a Wayne Rooney corner. Madrid hit back ten minutes later after a superb headed leap from Cristiano Ronaldo, who glanced the ball past the helpless David De Gea. Both sides hit the woodwork, but Sir Alex Ferguson will be delighted with the performances of his youngsters, David De Gea, Danny Welbeck and Phil Jones – who demonstrated exceptional maturity and quality on such a stage. Here we discuss the talking points of a truly brilliant football match.

United’s last 16 pairing in the Champions League has thrown up an opposition we’ve not faced for nearly 10 years – Real Madrid. Although many of us watch La Liga on a regular basis, it’s always worth getting an expert opinion on the intricacies and politics of the club. David Cartlidge has kindly written about Real and covered everything from their tactics to their obsession with a tenth European crown. David’s a freelance writer and written for a long list of reputable websites about Spanish football, most notably as a Spanish football expert for The Mirror. (He also happens to be a United fan!)

When a player leaves a club, you’re never quite sure exactly what to do. Is it wrong to still have an interest in him or should one be solely focussed on those who represent your team? The circumstances surrounding a departure often dictate which route is followed as does the status of the player. There’s no right or wrong way but many United fans have gone down the route of continuing to idolise Cristiano Ronaldo.
