Is Sir Alex Ferguson Manchester United’s very own Vince McMahon?

With the genuine rough and tumble of football in the 60s/70s giving way to the sniper like diving and slightest touch shrieking of football these days, it seems that football has followed a similar path to ‘professional’ wrestling.

In the glory days what you saw out on the pitch seemed genuine enough. Players such as Norman Hunter, Nobby Stiles and Ron ‘Chopper’ Harris dished out challenges that hurt. The enforcers of the game were just that, they distributed punishment that hurt. The same could be said of the wrestling world when it still operated in its ‘regional’ homes rather than the one or two giant companies. People such as the Von Erichs, Four Horseman and the quintessential Ric Flair wrestled with intensity and style you could believe hurt the unfortunate souls that entered their ring.

The man who took this industry and changed it forever was Vincent Kennedy McMahon. He realised that by bringing the different regions under one umbrella and basically eliminating competition would ensure his long term success. As the money came into the industry through better media exposure and more disposable income for customers, he exploited this and created a dynasty it is difficult to see being overthrown or made irrelevant in the future.

Sound familiar at all?

Manchester United take on Liverpool this Sunday in a game seen as the biggest of the Premier League season. With the controversy of the Evra/Suarez situation hopefully in the past, we can concentrate on what’s likely to be a red hot contest. With 14 red cards issued in recent history a lot will be expected of Howard Webb to keep things under control. The last five games between the sides have seen two wins each and a draw suggesting that form may not necessarily count for a lot. Here we take a look at each sides season so far, injuries, a potential United line up for the match and a superb view from the opposition. Comments are welcomed from both sets of fans.

We welcome Sunderland to Old Trafford on Saturday, looking to build on Sunday’s fantastic result at The Etihad and at least maintain our 6 point advantage over Man City. Fresh in the memory of the players and fans will be Sunderland fans ‘doing the Poznan’ celebration at the end of last season as City clinched the title at the death. Whilst revenge shouldn’t be the motivating factor for the win this Saturday it is essential we continue Sunday’s form against a Sunderland side buoyed by a comprehensive win over Reading in midweek. Here we discuss the match preview, lineups and injury news – welcoming comments from both sets of fans.

As the international break ends and we welcome back Premier League football, it’s Wigan Athletic that make the trip to Old Trafford on Saturday. United will be looking to hit back after an unconvincing victory at Southampton and will have revenge on their minds after the defeat at the DW Stadium last season which contributed to the loss of the league title. We preview the game and look for your thoughts on what is usually a home banker for the reds.

The weekend saw United travel to the Midlands to take on the Wolves and I was one of the lucky few able to get a ticket and support the team. As a way to spend the time on the coach constructively (well more constructively than reading the Sunday papers) I decided to pen a little diary of the day…

We’ve been extremely lucky as Manchester United fans, we’ve had stability for over twenty five years in the management of our club. Whilst we have had changes in ownership, playing staff and coaching staff, the man at the helm has been there through out.

Hello again.

In September I wrote an article for Stretford-End.com about my battle with depression and how football was helping me deal with the daily battle of it. At the time I was coping with my battle and felt I was getting it in check, however I am writing this after being off sick for 6 weeks suffering what may be the most difficult period of my battles.

Football – The Light On My Dark Passenger

The Dark Passenger, my nemesis, the thing that can change me as a person in the blink of an eye. The part of me deep inside that I’m constantly in battle with, the classic comic book enemy that never wins but always gets away at the end.

This is how I see my almost daily battle with what is described as anxiety and depression, it’s a battle that loses me sleep, energy and the ability to do the huge majority of the things I enjoy.

One thing that doesn’t give in to the Dark Passenger however is my love of football be it watching United, refereeing games at the weekend or having debates whether in person or on Twitter. The effect of football on my ability to get through the hard and dark days is like an airstrike on Call of Duty (Video Games are another way of coping), it destroys the majority of the bad thoughts but you always miss one or two in the bushes.

This is how the beauty, simplicity and belonging of football helps me deal with other aspects of my life and keeps me smiling on the hard days.
