Wayne Rooney will remain at Manchester United says Sir Alex Ferguson despite links with PSG

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson believes that Wayne Rooney has a long term future at the club, despite numerous press reports linking the forward in a summer move to French club PSG. Rooney is fourth in the all time United goal scorers, behind Jack Rowley, Denis Law and Bobby Charlton and will be participating in his ninth season at United in August. Rooney’s exclusive in the 2-1 defeat to Real Madrid made the morning papers, which was no doubt a blessing for Turkish referee Cuneyt Cakir. Ferguson was quoted as saying that established players, like Rooney, have a significant part to play in the development of the younger players next season.

Welbeck scores against Arsenal
Danny Welbeck scores against Arsenal for Manchester United

Manchester United, the newly crowned champions, travel to Arsenal on Sunday as the season draws to a close. Arsenal still have a lot to play for in order to qualify for the Champions League next season, desperate to get one over United, who return victorious with their former captain – Robin van Persie.

Last season, United ran out 2-1 winners with goals from Antonio Valencia and a late strike by Danny Welbeck. United’s top scorer, then at Arsenal, scored in between – but it concluded a double over the North London side, who had been humbled at Old Trafford in the previous August. United beat Arsenal 2-1 at Old Trafford earlier this campaign, with van Persie getting on the scoresheet inside the first few minutes. We welcome comments and predictions from both sets of fans.

Sir Alex Ferguson has defended Liverpool’s Luis Suarez in his Arsenal press conference

Sir Alex Ferguson remarkably backed Liverpool’s Luis Suarez after The FA issued the striker with a ten match ban following his press conference ahead of the Arsenal match on Sunday. Ferguson likened the issue with that of Eric Cantona some eighteen years ago and stated that he understood how Liverpool might feel ‘aggrieved’ at the sentence. For me, you can slate The FA, but surely the responsibility lies with the Uruguayan?

Eric Cantona was banned for nine months and made his return against Liverpool on October 1st 1995. United went on to win the double that season and Cantona scored the winner against Liverpool in the FA Cup.

As a season finishes, whilst Alex Ferguson is already looking ahead, planning and scheming for the next season, everyone else seems to obsess with what’s just happened. Players and moments are dissected, discussed and argued over to no end point. In an unprecedented move, I’m going to combine the two and explain just why David de Gea is the league’s best goalkeeper and point to the moment few realised that was the case.

Sir Alex Ferguson praises the impact of Manchester United’s forward Robin van Persie

As the hangover sets in, Fergie’s embarrassing dancing fades and the reality that Manchester United are indeed Champions of England once again, it is a good time to reflect on one of the players of the season – Robin van Persie. Sir Alex spoke after the game about the impact the Dutchman has had at the club since signing from Arsenal last summer and likened him to legendary captain Eric Cantona, for his impact in the big matches.

Van Persie could finish the season as the league’s top goalscorer and pick up the PFA Player of the year award – not a bad season to be fair! Read on to hear from the manager.

Robin van Persie scores a vital equaliser for Manchester United away against West Ham

Having already had a taste of the physical threat that West Ham pose at home, United went back there knowing a win would take them within touching distance of the title. After the good away win at Stoke at the weekend and with West Ham having little to play for now, you could have been forgiven for assuming a win might be a formality. But, West Ham, as they often seem to do, have a knack of raising their game when United come to town. Here we discuss the talking points of an eventful match and we welcome comments from both sets of fans.

Ashley Young will miss the rest of the season after picking up an ankle injury

Manchester United winger Ashley Young will miss the rest of the season after picking up an ankle injury in the 2-1 defeat to Manchester City two weeks ago.

Young and Manchester City captain Pablo Zabaleta had an altercation and in old school style, the Argentinian “got one over” the wide man and committed a late foul, which drew a booking. Young has played 23 times for United this season, grabbing four assists but failing to hit the back of the net this term.

West Ham United vs. Manchester United preview & line up
Robin van Persie
Robin van Persie has been Manchester United’s match winner & saviour against West Ham

Manchester United travel to West Ham on Wednesday evening hoping to maintain the fifteen point gap over Manchester City at the top of the table. Upton Park has been the scene of two disappointing results that had a catastrophic impact on United’s title surge. Back in 1991/92, United lost out to Leeds United in the title race – having been beaten by West Ham away, after an inspired performance from Czech goalkeeper Ludek Miklosko.

Fast forward three years, Miklosko put in another superb display, thwarting Andy Cole on numerous occasions, as United could only draw the match 1-1. Brian McClair’s goal wasn’t enough and Blackburn Rovers took the title. Since then, United have had a pretty good record against the Hammers, but lost two away games back to back in 2006/07 and 2007//08. United went on to win the title in both seasons. Here we discuss the match preview and welcome comments from both sets of fans.
