For United the situation is simple. Avoid defeat (i.e. they have two potential chances, draw or win the match), and the prospect of a 20th title is looking very tasty indeed. By default, City must chase the game (and seek to control it) in search of the three points required to re-position themselves at the top of the league before a tricky trip to Newcastle. The key question for both managers on Monday seems to be whether to play two or three central midfielders.

As the football season approaches its finale, another one approaches: ‘silly season’. A time for tabloids, agents, rumour men and wound-down car windows to come to the fore. United have already been linked to plenty of players who no doubt won’t join. Here though, are a few thoughts on those linked with moves away from the club and a prediction of how likely a transfer away could be. (NB I don’t necessarily advocate getting rid of any of the players listed, the scores are based on what I think rather than what I want.)

Manchester United 4-4 Everton: Talking Points

Pienaar scores an equalizer against Manchester United

Author: Stretford_End

Everton fought back from two goals down to draw an extremely entertaining game with title hopeful’s Manchester United. Jelavic gave the visitors the lead before ex-Evertonian Wayne Rooney scored an equalizer from a superb Nani cross. United took the lead in the second half with a breathtaking Danny Welbeck strike before Nani gave the home side a two goal cushion. Man of the match Marouane Fellaini scored a scintillating volley following decent delivery from Tony Hibbett on the right hand side. Rooney and Welbeck linked upto restore United’s two goal lead before two late strikes, again from Jelavic, and Pienaar gave the visitors a well earned point.

Here we discuss the talking points of a quite brilliant game and, as always, we welcome comments from both sets of supporters.

Wayne Rooney becomes United's 4th top goalscorer

Wayne Rooney is now 4th in the all time Manchester United goalscoring charts following his brace against Everton in the 4-4 draw today. He is now behind Jack Rowley, Denis Law and Sir Bobby Charlton respectfully. He overtook United legends George Best and Dennis Viollett. Rooney still has way to go to match the 249 goals notched up by Sir Bobby, however he could well catch Jack Rowley next season – who has 211 goals.

And it came to pass on Friday night that there was to be no end-of-season trophy for United’s Academy this time around. With the league title out of reach, one might suggest that as United’s high standards go, it’s been a disappointing campaign. But no, looking beyond the results, as is necessary at this level, there’s a whole plethora of things to be pleased with and excited about.

Derry-gate: Critique of FA lacks logic

Rooney argues with ref
Author: Nik

Yesterday we had, in the most ironic way imaginable, many commentators defying the baffling logic of the FA, with, of course… baffling logic. Amongst many, we had the Guardian and the Independent (no less) adjudging the FA to be a ‘shambles’ a ‘farce’ and a ‘chaotic mess’; Atkinson and his officials were hauled over the coals, and the ‘suits’ were deemed ‘slaves to Blatter’. And why? Because the FA and the PGMO had decided to stick by the rules, honour the laws of the game, continue to act in a way that was consulted upon with the LMA, PFA and various other football bodies (consulting the fans on this would just be stupid). Staggering!
