Alex Tettey boots home Norwich’s second goal as Manchester United lose for the first time at home

The pressure is piling on Louis van Gaal and his Manchester United side following a humiliating home defeat to Norwich, who were third from bottom at the start of play. The newly promoted side fully deserved their hard grafted win, with two simple goals on the counter attack. United looked limp, slow and uncreative in a game that was very reminiscent of previous fixtures.

Alex Tettey, who scored Norwich’s second goal, was immense in the middle of the park. The visitors were first to every ball, harried United’s players and were well worth their first win at Old Trafford since 1989/90. Van Gaal, who had been defiant in recent weeks following similarity poor performances and results, appeared to be in a more sombre mood – perhaps a man who realises that his job is on the line – following the 2-1 defeat. Ryan Giggs, Pep Guardiola and Jose Mourinho are all candidates that have been linked with the United hot seat and the next two games against Stoke City and Chelsea will be crucial in the fate of the Dutchman.

Norwich City travel to United as Jose Mourinho rumours grow

Shinji Kagawa, Manchester United v Norwich
Shinji Kagawa scores a hattrick for Manchester United against Norwich City back in 20013/14

Manchester United are looking for their first win since the 2-1 victory over Watford a month ago. In that time, United have been dumped out of the Champions League and have lost ground on leaders Leicester City in the league. This week has also seen the biggest managerial casualty of the season so far. Jose Mourinho was shown the Stamford Bridge exit as the Portuguese departs Chelsea for what is surely the final time. Some bookies have put Mourinho as favouite to be the next Manchester United manager. The independent have also suggested that Mourinho’s representatives have reached out to Manchester United as it is “the job he covets the most”.

Louis van Gaal will be looking over his shoulder as pressure grows on the United boss to start delivering a brand of football that is usually associated with the twenty times English champions. The news that Pep Guardiola is set to leave his post at Bayern Munich will of course have alerted Manchester City, Chelsea and to a lesser extent Arsenal – who will only ever act on Arsene Wenger’s terms. United will be in the mix for the in demand Spaniard, but Ryan Giggs is surely the more likely candidate to succeed the Dutchman when his contract expires in 2017.

United’s last home goal came in the 2-0 victory over WBA at the start of November , so United need to put in a performance against Norwich City, who last won at Old Trafford back in 1989/90 with a 2-0 victory at the beginning of the season. The visitors have conceded 18 goals away from Carrow Road this campaign, but are up against a United side that are goal shy at home – netting nine goals so far; sixteen goals fewer than Manchester City in third.

Shinji Kagawa, Manchester United v Norwich
Manchester United thrashed Norwich City 4-0 last season with Shinji Kagawa netting a hattrick

Managerless Manchester United welcome struggling Norwich City to Old Trafford, in what is a highly important encounter for the visitors. The Canaries are only two points off the drop zone, having lost last weekend to Liverpool and to fellow strugglers Fulham a week before that. United, who will be under the guidance of interim boss Ryan Giggs, on the other hand have had yet another turbulent week, with the sacking of manager David Moyes following his disastrous ten month spell in charge, which reached a whimpering climax in the 2-0 defeat away at Everton on Sunday.

Although United won this fixture 4-0 last season on the way to the league title, however – all the talk on Saturday will be about who will be taking over at the helm come 2014/15. Will it be Louis Van Gaal? Jurgen Klopp? Or even Sir Alex Ferguson?! You can vote below.

The second game in three days brought another 3 points for the reds in what was at times, a war of attrition. Norwich made life difficult for United and on another day may have taken something from the game. The introduction of Danny Welbeck at half time brought some much needed pace and urgency to a forward line that failed to create much. It was Welbecks quick reaction and calm in front of goal that secured a 1-0 win.

The lack of Wayne Rooney, out with a groin strain left United without the man who had made us tick in recent weeks. We can only hope he will be available for the visit of Spurs on New Year’s day.

Here we look at the talking points of the game at Carrow Road and invite comments/opinion from both sets of fans.

Anthony Pilkington heads home for Norwich City v Manchester United
Anthony Pilkington scores the winner for Norwich City last season against Manchester United

Manchester United travel to Norwich this afternoon looking to improve further on five back to back wins in all competitions. United lost 1-0 to Norwich last season following a great goal from Anthony Pilkington. Norwich are currently three points above the relegation zone and were subjected to a disappointing defeat to Fulham on Boxing Day after a late Scott Parker winner.

David Moyes travels today without the suspended Antonio Valencia, who received his marching orders late in the 3-2 victory over Hull City and Rafael who pick up a groin injury in the same match. Michael Carrick, could return to the starting lineup for the first time since the 1-0 win over Arsenal back in November.

Manchester United vs. Norwich: view from the oppo

Shinji Kagawa, Manchester United v Norwich
Shinji Kagawa scores a hattrick against Norwich for Manchester United in the fixture last March.

Norwich City have are unbeaten in the League Cup against Manchester United. Ok, the two clubs may have only met three times, a two legged semi final in 1975 (which ended as 2-2 at Old Trafford and 1-0 to Norwich at Carrow Road) and a 4-1 drubbing in the 3rd round away in East Anglia sixteen years before Adnan Januzaj was even born (bet that makes you feel old), but history is on the side of the Canaries. United hammered Norwich 4-0 in March, with a superb hattrick from Shinji Kagawa and an excellent long range effort by Wayne Rooney.

The fixture will surely give David Moyes a chance to rotate his side and give the likes if Zaha, and Hernandez a run out. United travel to struggling Fulham on Saturday afternoon and the Manchester United manager will want to ensure he has a full strength squad, so expect the likes of Rooney, van Persie and Carrick to be rested.

Shinji Kagawa scores for Manchester United against Norwich City
Shinji Kagawa scores the first of his hattrick in the 4-0 victory over Norwich City

Manchester United prepared for the visit of Real Madrid with a 4-0 victory over Norwich City, who had beaten United 1-0 earlier in the season. Shinji Kagawa scored a superb hattrick and Wayne Rooney hit a superb strike in to the top corner in the ninetieth minute. The 4-0 victory puts Manchester United fifteen points clear, with Manchester City traveling to Aston Villa on Monday night. The win was the 33rd time United had beaten Norwich in all competitions. Here we discuss the talking points of a one sided game, where a single player stole the show – Shinji Kagawa. We welcome comments from both sets of fans.

Ever since the defeat at Norwich earlier in the season, United’s league form has been exemplary. By contrast, it’s been a mixed back for Norwich who’ve only won once in the league since mid-December, conveniently last weekend. Although comfortably above the relegation zone, they are a couple of defeats away from being sucked into uncomfortable territory. For United, there’s a balancing act to be done with the manager needing to pick a side with Real Madrid midweek in mind. As ever, we welcome comments and opinions from both sets of fans.

Man City went top at lunchtime on Saturday as Chelsea lost at West Brom. It meant that United knew they’d have to win at Carrow Road to ensure they ended the weekend as the league leaders. Norwich had famously beaten United at home in 2005 and this season they’d conquered Arsenal – despite what the TV pundits thought, this was never going to be a simple victory for the Reds. We welcome comments from both sets of supporters.
