Ashley Young
Ashley Young will miss the rest of the season after picking up an ankle injury

Manchester United winger Ashley Young will miss the rest of the season after picking up an ankle injury in the 2-1 defeat to Manchester City two weeks ago.

Young and Manchester City captain Pablo Zabaleta had an altercation and in old school style, the Argentinian “got one over” the wide man and committed a late foul, which drew a booking. Young has played 23 times for United this season, grabbing four assists but failing to hit the back of the net this term.

Paul Scholes scores against Bolton
Paul Scholes could be set to retire fears former Manchester United captain Bryan Robson

According to the Manchester Evening News, former club captain and legend Bryan Robson, fears that Paul Scholes may be set for retirement at the end of the season. Scholes made a dramatic return to United in the 3-2 victory over Manchester City in last season’s FA Cup.

Sadly, Scholes’ return didn’t help towards United’s title surge, losing out to City in the final seconds of the final day. United’s midfield genius last played in the 4-1 FA Cup victory over Fulham in January. Scholes is in third in the all time appearances for Manchester United, but trails Bobby Charlton – who is in second place – by 42 apps.

Do you think Scholes’ time is up?

Marouane Fellaini and Phil Jones
Phil Jones has been in great form but picked up an ankle injury in the victory over Reading

Manchester United are through to the quarter finals of the FA Cup after a 2-1 victory over Reading at Old Trafford, however Phil Jones picked up an ankle injury as was seen leaving Old Trafford on crutches. Jones, who was excellent in the 1-1 draw in Madrid, rolled his ankle in a tackle on Reading captain Jobi McAnuff and was replaced by Nani just before half time. The versatile youngster will be hoping it is only strained ankle ligaments as United enter the business end of the season.

Chris Smalling will out of action for up to ten weeks following a broken metatarsal sustained last Wednesday (in training) Sir Alex Ferguson has revealed. Smalling injured his groin towards the end of last season, which ruled him out for Euro 2012 and the Great Britain football team for the Olympics. Ferguson had recently revealed that he expected Smalling to be fit for the Premier League opener away at Everton on 20th August, but he will have to wait until October to get his young defender back in the starting line up.

Manchester United captain Nemanja Vidic and Chris Smalling will be fit for the start of the Premier League campaign on August 20th away at Everton. Vidic has been missing from the United lineup since December, when he suffered a ruptured cruciate ligament injury against FC Basel in the Champions League. Chris Smalling has been out of action since the end of the season with a groin injury, which ruled him out of England’s Euro 2012 squad. Vidic was a massive loss to United, who lost the title on goal difference to Manchester City.

The young United defenders who might be needed

Jonny Evans was subbed off at half time against Wigan, he was on a yellow card so precaution was my natural instinct; however news of a calf injury filtered through soon after the final whistle. With Vidic out for the season; Fabio injured; Rio suffering from a few niggles; Rafael not match fit; and Smalling/Jones ill; there’s a possibility some of the Reserves may have to be called up to play. United are already stretched with Carrick and Valencia having to play at the back, but like we did when Fletcher’s situation was announced, here’s an introduction to the defenders in the Reserves should they be needed.

Fletcher news should see United’s reserve troops put on standby

In light of the news that Darren Fletcher will be out for an unknown period of time to hopefully recover from his illness; I thought it was worth a look at the players who may have to be used from the Reserves, whether they are ready or not. The reality is that Carrick and Gibson are now the only fit central midfielders and despite Rooney, Giggs, Park and Jones all having covered there (and Valencia who Fergie has hinted can play there) the reality is we’re scarily short of in that area. Clearly, a signing (signings) is (are) needed but given the reluctance of our owners to make money available (note a low net spend in the past five years – imperative you read Daniel Taylor’s superb piece on this), it’s feasible we’ll have to find answers, even if just to make up numbers on the bench, from within.

Vidic injured against FC Basel

It is being reported that Manchester United captain Nemanja Vidic has suffered a ruptured cruciate ligament, which will rule him out for the remainder of the 2011/12 season. The news will come as a massive blow to Sir Alex Ferguson who saw his Manchester United side dumped of the Champions League by Swiss side FC Basel. United have suffered a number of injuries to defenders this season, with Vidic and Ferdinand picking up injuries on the opening day of the season against WBA.

Jonny Evans – The Concept Album

The difficult second album followed by the ‘concept’ album, every band/singer seems to go through this process. Promoted clubs tend to suffer from ‘second season’ syndrome, notable examples are Hull, Sunderland and West Brom.

So it is that players seem to have the same problems when establishing themselves in a squad. One player who has just been through his difficult ‘second season’ is Jonny Evans. Whilst not officially his second season, it has been the inevitable ‘dip’ that players have once they burst onto the scene.

As the club looks to invest in youth and create the next generation of team what can we expect from Jonny Evans?

Owen Hargreaves

AUTHOR: – Doron

The somewhat inevitable news that Manchester United won’t be offering Owen Hargreaves a new contract has been announced by the Daily Mail. His four year stay at the club will come to an end when his contract expires next month and he’ll have to find a new club to try and resurrect his career.
