“First match, it was a loss. The second match is a draw. So maybe today it’s a victory.”

No such luck for Louis van Gaal who again leaves an away ground with two fewer points than should have been expected. Whilst the game was overshadowed by the debut of Angel di Maria, the anticipated lift of spirits seemed to fizzle early on with the defensive line at sixes and sevens and little in the way of dynamism from anyone not named Angel. Burnley were unlucky not to be a goal up early on with a free kick hitting the post and then Jonny Evans nearly gifting a goal were David de Gea not already running out to clear the ball, but United could easily have claimed two penalties in the second half as Ashley Young was pushed off the ball and Ashley Barnes of Burnley blocked the ball with his hands just a short while later.

Here we discuss the Talking Points from the game and welcome comments from both sets of fans.

Di Maria could make his United debut against Burnley

Angel di Maria
Angel Di Maria could make his debut against Burnley at Turf Moor

Manchester United travel to Turf Moor in the early weekend kickoff in what could be new signing Angel Di Maria’s debut for the club. The former Real Madrid midfielder became the club’s record signing, breaking the English transfer record when he signed for nearly £60 million in the week. The Argentine is the fifth most expensive footballer after James Rodriquez, Luis Suarez, Cristiano Ronaldo and Gareth Bale.

United’s new number seven would have been shocked to see his new team mates go down 4-0 to MK Dons in the week and will surely be included in the starting Xi as Louis van Gaal looks to pick up his first win as manager.

Newly promoted Burnley are also looking for their first win, having lost 3-1 to Chelsea in their first fixture of the season and losing 1-0 to Swansea City, who of course beat United 2-1 on the opening day. Sean Dyche has done a great job at the club and will be hoping for a repeat of the 1-0 victory over Manchester United in the late August of 2009. The two clubs have only played twice in the Premier League era and the last time, before 2009, that United traveled to Turf Moor was in the 1975/76 season where Lou Macari scored the winner.

It’s that time of year again – the FA Youth Cup focuses attention on the younger players at United and thrusts them into the limelight for hopefully the next few months. Last year United lost at this same stage, going down 4-3 at home to Burnley despite having the likes of Pearson, Januzaj, Daehli and Wilson all starting. There’s a chance for revenge though as the draw has thrown up Burnley once again, this time on away turf on Monday night.

Rooney and Berbatov celebrate

It threatened to be a long afternoon and Burnley threatened to upset the applecart for long periods of this Premier League game, but Manchester United turned up the pressure in the second half to record a comfortable 3 goal victory against their local opponents, exacting some revenge for their defeat in the return fixture in August.
