A trip to St James’ Park is usually full of goals and this visit was no exception. With Wayne Rooney being a major doubt for the trip to Bayern next week and others being rested, it was a much changed team for United. The likes of Ferdinand, Vidic and Carrick were rested with Fletcher, Mata and Hernandez making starts.

The game itself was a dull affair with very little happening until Mata stepped up to bury a free kick shortly before halftime. Just to the right of the penalty ‘D’, Mata stepped up and curled a fabulous shot over the wall and into the top corner of the goal. After the break Uniteds tails were up and a second for Mata took the game away from Newcastle. Further goals from Hernandez and Januzaj made the score more reflective of Uniteds dominance in the box.

Here we pick out the talking points of the match and invite discussion from fans in the comments below.

Another home game, another 1-0 defeat for Manchester United, this time at the hands of Newcastle United. Last Sunday at Spurs, the side entered the week full of confidence after thrashing Bayer Leverkusen and having recently taken down table-topping Arsenal at Old Trafford. It’s safe to say that, after a draw against Spurs and two deserved home beatings by Everton and Newcastle, Mr. Moyes, the players and United fans worldwide won’t be bursting with optimism as they trudge in to work on Monday.

Twelve games in, United’s start to the Premier League campaign was underwhelming but largely explicable – with a new manager, tough opening fixtures and injuries to key players all taken into account. Since then, however, things have worsened dramatically. It’s become a crisis, – a large, signposted crisis. We’ll look briefly at what went wrong on Saturday, as well as some of the issues that need fixing if United are to come back stronger, as we always know them to do.

After the pre-Christmas draw at Swansea, United were hoping to get back to winning ways at home to Newcastle United. The Geordies, whilst fresh from a big morale boosting win over QPR, had injury issues and a pretty naff record at Old Trafford to contend with. This was to be a wet, sodden game that provided much more drama and entertainment than one could have imagined. We welcome comments from both sets of supporters.

United’s struggle at Newcastle last season was fresh in the minds of fans and probably players ahead of the annual trip to St James’ Park. United’s form has been patchy and following the defeat against Spurs last weekend, a response was needed. Newcastle had defensive injuries and were missing their first choice goalkeeper as well as both centre backs. Still, their front six meant that this was a game that couldn’t be taken lightly. We welcome comments from both sets of supporters.

After coming away with three Champions League points in Cluj on Wednesday, Man United face a very tough away trip to Newcastle on Sunday. The team will be trying to get its league form back into some semblance of order after last weekend’s surprising, pulsating but ultimately deserved defeat at home to Spurs. Newcastle come into the match on the back of a 3-0 Europa League win against Bordeaux in the Europa League. As always, we look forward to hearing from fans of both teams.

Man United’s first foray into the Capital One Cup saw them take on Newcastle at Old Trafford last night. Both managers made plenty of changes to incorporate youngsters and players returning from injury – that didn’t created a disjointed game though as both sides contributed to a very watchable 90 minutes of football. As ever, we welcome comments from both sets of supporters.
