Manchester United emerged from the Emirates last night with a 0-0 draw against Arsenal. United’s ever-chirpy Instagram account described it as a “promising point” while fans on Twitter, in contravention of basic mathematics and the fact that Arsenal away is quite a difficult game, determined it to be a “pointless point.” The buildup to the match was somewhat strange, with United miles away from the title race for the first time in decades, and the Gunners still in contention for the first time in at least six years.

Nevertheless, this fixture played out as it often has in recent years – tense, tight, United set up to defend deep and hit on the break, with Arsenal playing most of their football in front of the United backline. With both teams coming off massive disappointments – including Arsenal’s 5-1 shellacking at Anfield, and every aspect of Manchester United’s existence for the past eight months – there was a palpable hesitancy about the attacking play, and 0-0 in the end was an unsurprising result. As always, we look forward to hearing from both sets of fans (as well as resident comment troll Minimal, whose allegiance is yet to be determined).

Arsenal Vs. Manchester United view from the opposition

Robin van Persie scores the winner against Arsenal for Manchester United at Old Trafford

Manchester United travel to the Emirates to take on Arsenal following disappointing results for both clubs over the weekend. The visitors could only manage a draw against bottom club Fulham, whilst Arsenal were hammered 5-1 by a rampant Arsenal. United have only beaten two teams, as it stands this evening, in the top ten – West Ham, who have risen to tenth following their win over Norwich, and Arsenal – with a Robin van Persie header back in November.

Since that game, United have only won three games in the league at Old Trafford – a shocking statistic. The visitors are without Phil Jones and Jonny Evans, who both picked up injuries in the 2-1 defeat away at Stoke City, whilst Arsenal have Yaya Sanogo available from a long term injury.

In the aftermath of United’s win over Arsenal yesterday there’s been a lot of attention on a variety of things but maybe not enough on United as a team, a group of players. Arsenal underperformed, resorted to playing long balls more than they’d liked to and didn’t test de Gea – but why?

Manchester United 1-0 Arsenal: van Persie header closes gap

Manchester United 1-0 Arsenal: van Persie header closes gap

Manchester United close the gap on Arsenal after Robin van Persie scored in a 1-0 win

Its had to be him. Manchester United’s leading scorer from last season, Robin van Persie scored again against his old club to close the gap on the league leaders. The current champions could have been eleven points behind the North London club come 5:45pm, had Arsenal continued their impressive away displays, but it was their former captain who had the final say. Wayne Rooney’s superb delivery from a corner was met by the Dutchman at the near post mid way through the first half. A injury to skipper Nemanja Vidic was a blow just before half time, especially considering the dominance the Serb showed against lone front man Olivier Giroud, however Phil Jones slotted in alongside Jonny Evans to continue his impressive development.

Here we discuss the talking points of an extremely important win for Manchester United and welcome comments from both sets of fans.

Manchester United transfer round up: Rooney, Fabregas & Thiago

Cesc Fabregas is the subject of a £25million bid from Manchester United

Manchester United have had an eventful couple of days. First of all, hattrick hero Thiago decided to scribble out David De Gea’s message and head for Bavaria where he will link up with his old mentor Pep Guardiola. No sooner were reds infuriated with themselves for spending so long on reading up on the fact that he is the son of Mazinho – the man who missed a laughable chance in the 1994 World Cup final – attentions were turned to pizza throwing snotty nose ex Arsenal captain Cesc Fabregas, a glorious playmaker who would be a wonderful signing, especially for the generous £25million reportedly bid by the English Champions.

Then, there is Wayne Rooney – the man who looks destined to not be playing at Old Trafford this season. Here we take a look at the last couple of days and what the future could potentially hold.

United to move 'Heaven and earth' to get Cesc Fabregas says Irwin

Cesc Fabregas has been linked with a sensational move to Manchester United

Ex Manchester United full back Denis Irwin believes that Cesc Fabregas has ‘zoomed up’ the club’s priority list and feels that the ‘all action midfielder’ is exactly what the champions need next term. It has been widely reported that Arsenal have first option to resign the midfielder, who left for Barcelona two seasons ago. The Spanish midfielder, who has played a part in Spain’s three recent triumphs (at Euro 2008, World Cup 2010 and Euro 2012), has found his playing time limited this term but will surely want to stay around a little longer at his boyhood club? The transfer speculation season is sadly upon us!

Welbeck scores against Arsenal
Danny Welbeck scores against Arsenal for Manchester United

Manchester United, the newly crowned champions, travel to Arsenal on Sunday as the season draws to a close. Arsenal still have a lot to play for in order to qualify for the Champions League next season, desperate to get one over United, who return victorious with their former captain – Robin van Persie.

Last season, United ran out 2-1 winners with goals from Antonio Valencia and a late strike by Danny Welbeck. United’s top scorer, then at Arsenal, scored in between – but it concluded a double over the North London side, who had been humbled at Old Trafford in the previous August. United beat Arsenal 2-1 at Old Trafford earlier this campaign, with van Persie getting on the scoresheet inside the first few minutes. We welcome comments and predictions from both sets of fans.

Sir Alex Ferguson defends Liverpool’s Luis Suarez after FA ban

Sir Alex Ferguson has defended Liverpool’s Luis Suarez in his Arsenal press conference

Sir Alex Ferguson remarkably backed Liverpool’s Luis Suarez after The FA issued the striker with a ten match ban following his press conference ahead of the Arsenal match on Sunday. Ferguson likened the issue with that of Eric Cantona some eighteen years ago and stated that he understood how Liverpool might feel ‘aggrieved’ at the sentence. For me, you can slate The FA, but surely the responsibility lies with the Uruguayan?

Eric Cantona was banned for nine months and made his return against Liverpool on October 1st 1995. United went on to win the double that season and Cantona scored the winner against Liverpool in the FA Cup.

After a double-header against Chelsea, United faced another London-based side as Arsenal came to Old Trafford. It’s early in the season but Arsenal are already off the pace set by United, Chelsea and City – a defeat would only reassert that a title challenge will probably not happen this year. For United, there was a chance to go top with Chelsea playing at Swansea later in the day. We welcome comments from both sets of supporters.
