Arsenal vs. Manchester United preview & line up
Welbeck scores against Arsenal
Danny Welbeck scores against Arsenal for Manchester United

Manchester United, the newly crowned champions, travel to Arsenal on Sunday as the season draws to a close. Arsenal still have a lot to play for in order to qualify for the Champions League next season, desperate to get one over United, who return victorious with their former captain – Robin van Persie.

Last season, United ran out 2-1 winners with goals from Antonio Valencia and a late strike by Danny Welbeck. United’s top scorer, then at Arsenal, scored in between – but it concluded a double over the North London side, who had been humbled at Old Trafford in the previous August. United beat Arsenal 2-1 at Old Trafford earlier this campaign, with van Persie getting on the scoresheet inside the first few minutes. We welcome comments and predictions from both sets of fans.

Sir Alex Ferguson defends Liverpool’s Luis Suarez after FA ban

Sir Alex Ferguson has defended Liverpool’s Luis Suarez in his Arsenal press conference

Sir Alex Ferguson remarkably backed Liverpool’s Luis Suarez after The FA issued the striker with a ten match ban following his press conference ahead of the Arsenal match on Sunday. Ferguson likened the issue with that of Eric Cantona some eighteen years ago and stated that he understood how Liverpool might feel ‘aggrieved’ at the sentence. For me, you can slate The FA, but surely the responsibility lies with the Uruguayan?

Eric Cantona was banned for nine months and made his return against Liverpool on October 1st 1995. United went on to win the double that season and Cantona scored the winner against Liverpool in the FA Cup.

After a double-header against Chelsea, United faced another London-based side as Arsenal came to Old Trafford. It’s early in the season but Arsenal are already off the pace set by United, Chelsea and City – a defeat would only reassert that a title challenge will probably not happen this year. For United, there was a chance to go top with Chelsea playing at Swansea later in the day. We welcome comments from both sets of supporters.

Manchester United beat Arsenal 2-1 at the Emirates back in January

Authors: Stretford_End

Manchester United host Arsenal at Old Trafford for the 187th league meeting between the two clubs. United come into this game following a league win and a league cup defeat to Chelsea, whilst Arsenal beat QPR last Saturday 1-0 and came back from 4-0 down to win an epic cup tie midweek against Reading. Robin van Persie will lineup for the first time against his old club, whilst the North Londoners will want to try and avenge the 8-2 defeat from last season. We welcome comments from both sets of fans.

Robin van Persie – fabulous signing but is he necessary?

After weeks of speculation it’s happened. United have broken their signings policy to make 29 year old Robin van Persie a Manchester United player (subject to a medical and personal terms being agreed). The move, whilst immensely pleasing, is slightly odd – going into the off-season period, I’m not sure many United fans would have felt that another striker was the priority. Nevertheless, last season’s Premier League top scorer is a United player.

Robin Van Persie signs for Manchester United

Robin Van Persie in his Arsenal days
Robin Van Persie has signed for Manchester United from Arsenal for a reported £22 million transfer fee (only £15m up front) subject to a medical and personal terms being agreed. One of the most eyebrow raising transfers of all time is now official, Van Persie is now a Manchester United player. Sir Alex Ferguson will see this as a massive triumph after seeing over challenges from Serie A champions Juventus and most importantly Manchester City. The Dutchman notched up thirty league goals last term and the prospect of lining up with Wayne Rooney should have most Reds licking their lips.

Robin Van Persie should choose Manchester United over Manchester City says ex-red Gary Pallister, suggesting that the Dutchman will get ‘frustrated’ at United’s rivals due to their strength in depth up top. Pallister played for United for nine years after signing from Middlesbrough in 1989 – his £2.3million transfer fee was a record for a defender at the time. Robin Van Persie is currently at the centre of a transfer wrangle between United, City and Juventus – whilst Arsene Wenger and a number of players would obviously like to keep him at Arsenal. The latest odds suggest that Juventus are leading the way for his signature.

Robin Van Persie and Luka Modric have both been linked with moves to Manchester United in the press today, with many reds shocked at the notion of the Arsenal captain moving to Old Trafford. It appears that Van Persie will leave Arsenal this summer, after failing to agree a new contract with the North London club. He also released a statement informing the Arsenal fans as to the reasons why he would not be renewing his contract. Luka Modric has been unsettled for some time and was subject of a £40million move to Chelsea last summer. Now that Tottenham, unluckily, are not in the draw for 2012/13 Champions League, it seems that Modric will be on his way out of the club – providing his valuation is met.
