Juan Mata and his team mates are “absolutely delighted” with the 3-2 victory over Arsenal at Old Trafford on Sunday. Marcus Rashford netted a brace before Ander Herrera scored the winner midway through the second half. Mata, who is ten games away from a century of Manchester United appearances, played well through the middle flanked by fellow Spaniard Herrera and Morgan Schneiderlin.

The 27 year old spoke about progress in both the FA Cup and Europa League, but referred to “the top positions in the Premier League”, indicating that the club would settle for a Champions League spot, rather than a very late title surge. Mata, who has scored four goals in twenty seven games for United this season, was full of praise for youngster Marcus Rashford – describing the week as one he’ll never forget.

Marcus Rashford scores twice against Arsenal to give Manchester United a deserved victory

Marcus Rashford, who made his Manchester United debut against FC Midtjylland in the week, scored another brace on his Premier League debut this to end a wonder week for the 18 year old local lad. Louis van Gaal’s men hadn’t picked up three points since the 3-0 victory over Stoke City at the start of the month.

In that time, United fans had seen their side concede a late equaliser at Chelsea, lose two fixtures 2-1 to struggling Sunderland and Europa League minnows Midtjylland – before beating Shrewsbury in the FA Cup and thumping their Danish foes in the return leg. A win was needed for United, who were up against an Arsenal side needing a big “pick me up” from the 2-0 defeat at the hands of Barcelona midweek.

United were well worth the three points against a below par Arsenal side, who are falling further behind in the race for the title. The home side fielded three players making their Premier League debuts, in Rashford, Timothy Fosu-Mensah and James Weir. United have now fielded debuts to eight players this season under Louis van Gaal. If the attacking football hasn’t been quite vintage, the belief in youth talent remains.

Anthony Martial is a major doubt for Manchester United, who are already missing captain Wayne Rooney through injury. Martial picked up a hamstring injury in the warm up against FC Midtjylland in midweek and could well miss the clash against Arsenal. David De Gea is due to return in goal for the home side, having also missed the game through picking up an injury in the same warm up. United have only won two of the last six games at home.

Arsenal are looking to bounce back from their 2-0 defeat at the hands of reigning European Cup holders Barcelona. Arsene Wenger suggesting that his side only has a 5% chance of qualifying for the next round – so focus will turn to the league title and the FA Cup. The Gunners last picked up a league win at Old Trafford in the 2006/07 season, when Emmanuel Adebayor scored a late winner. The away side are without Alex Oxlade Chamberlain – who picked up a knee injury in the Champions League match against Barcelona. Wenger’s men have only won one of their last four away matches.

It was going so well. Top of the league, looking down at the multitude of implosions that threatened to keep Louis van Gaal’s Red and White Army in title contention, scoring goals and conceding next to nothing. It was going so well that it had to end at some point but no one expected it to be within the first twenty minutes of Sunday’s game at the Emirates. It wasn’t going THAT well.

Wayne Rooney celebrates as Manchester United beat Arsenal at the Emirates last season

Manchester United travel to Arsenal knowing that a win will return the club to the top of the Premier League following Manchester City’s 6-1 thumping of Newcastle United yesterday. The home side come into the match off the back of a shock 3-2 defeat at home in the Champions League, which leaves the North London club at the bottom of their group. United come in off the back of beating Sunderland at home last weekend and thwarting German club Wolfburg midweek having gone a goal behind.

Anthony Martial will be looking to add to his tally of four goals so far this season with the revelation that Arsene Wenger had enquired about the teenager when at Lyon and also at Monaco – only for the club to sell the youngster to Manchester United for a world record fee, for a teenager, of £36 million plus add ons on transfer deadline day.

Manchester United beat Arsenal 2-1 at the Emirates in November

Manchester United, who have all but qualified for the Champions League next season, do battle once again with FA Cup finalists Arsenal in a game which could see the home side swap places with the Londoners with a victory. United will be without their skipper, Wayne Rooney, who is still suffering from picking up a dead leg injury last weekend against Crystal Palace. This could mean a start for ex-Arsenal skipper, Robin van Persie, who has no doubt struggled for form since Sir Alex Ferguson departed at the end of his quite brilliant debut season.

Luke Shaw is also set to miss the game following his injury in the fixture last weekend. Louis van Gaal also spoke of the upcoming Euro U21 tournament in the summer, which he feels Shaw should miss in order for his body to recover.

Wayne Rooney celebrates United’s first goal as Kieran Gibbs looks on helplessly

Manchester United notched up their first away win of the season and what a win it was. The visitors were under siege for the majority of the first half, with only the heroics of David De Gea stopping Jack Wilshere from opening the scoring for Arsenal. United were up against Danny Welbeck for the first time since his move in the summer, but the former United forward couldn’t find the breakthrough for his new club.

Kieran Gibbs was extremely unlucky to turn Antonio Valencia’s wayward shot into his own net, but it was what United had needed following Arsenal’s first half dominance. United were then able to sit back and soak up pressure and hit the home side on the counter attack, which was achieved to perfection in the 85th minute. Marouane Fellaini found Angel Di Maria on the right of the pitch and the Argentine burst forward before slotting in Wayne Rooney who finished with a delicate chip. Olivier Giroud responded late on for Arsenal, but it was too late as United picked up all three points. Here we discuss the talking points from the game and welcome comments from both sets of fans.

Robin van Persie scuffing a great early chance against Arsenal last season

Manchester United travel to Arsenal today to face their old adversaries and one of their own. Danny Welbeck will lineup for the first time against his old club, since Louis van Gaal deemed United’s former number 19 surplus to requirements, following the arrival of Radamel Falcao. The Colombian’s career at Old Trafford hasn’t got going following a string of injuries that has kept him sidelined. Welbeck has played more minutes and has netted five goals to Falcao’s single strike, which came against Everton back in October.

It is ironic that United’s last win at The Emirates came in January 2012, with Welbeck scoring the winner in a 2-1 victory. United have a very good record at Arsenal in the past fifteen years, only losing
three times since that 3-1 defeat with Barthez gifting Thierry Henry two goals. United have had some superb moments at Arsenal, with the 4-2 victory (at Highubury) and the 3-1 victory in the Champions League semi final – the pick of the bunch.

The title decider label may have disappeared some time ago, but a win is vital for both teams who are falling behind Chelsea, Southampton and Manchester City.
