Marcus Rashford scores twice against Arsenal to give Manchester United a deserved victory

Marcus Rashford, who made his Manchester United debut against FC Midtjylland in the week, scored another brace on his Premier League debut this to end a wonder week for the 18 year old local lad. Louis van Gaal’s men hadn’t picked up three points since the 3-0 victory over Stoke City at the start of the month.

In that time, United fans had seen their side concede a late equaliser at Chelsea, lose two fixtures 2-1 to struggling Sunderland and Europa League minnows Midtjylland – before beating Shrewsbury in the FA Cup and thumping their Danish foes in the return leg. A win was needed for United, who were up against an Arsenal side needing a big “pick me up” from the 2-0 defeat at the hands of Barcelona midweek.

United were well worth the three points against a below par Arsenal side, who are falling further behind in the race for the title. The home side fielded three players making their Premier League debuts, in Rashford, Timothy Fosu-Mensah and James Weir. United have now fielded debuts to eight players this season under Louis van Gaal. If the attacking football hasn’t been quite vintage, the belief in youth talent remains.

Will Keane scored a beautiful chip for Manchester United against Norwich

It ended up finishing 7-0 to United with 5 goals for Will Keane, a penalty by Pereira and a first U21 goal for Fosu-Mensah. Phil Jones played an hour whilst Januzaj and Varela went off injured in the first half. United were brilliant but it was against a young Norwich side.

The pick of the goals was a sumptuous chip by Keane after he’d beaten a couple of defenders

FA Youth Cup: United’s Under-18s to finally be rewarded for their performances?

FA Youth Cup: United's Under-18s to finally be rewarded for their performances?

Will Manchester United be rewarded in the FA Youth Cup for their performances?

No matter how the season has gone to date, when the FA Youth Cup comes round there is always an expectation at Man United that the Under-18 side will do well. So far this century United haven’t been dominant like they were in the past; two trophy wins is bettered by both Arsenal (3) and Chelsea (4). Last season United beat Bury and Hull but lost to an impressive Spurs team in the 5th Round, this year can they go further?

The international breaks tend to throw up nonsense club-related news and in the break just gone, there was one story in particular that deserves some attention. You may have been made aware, particularly by fans of other clubs, that United’s young players were very poorly represented in the England youth teams this past week. Why has that happened and are United falling behind at youth level?

Around this time of year there are usually blogs effusive with praise for Warren Joyce and what he’s been able to achieve over the course of the season with the United U21 side. Here’s another one, except this year has arguably been even more of a challenge than usual.

Through club channels, social media and the traditional media there is an ever-growing interest in youth football today. There are three stand-out reasons for this: 1) there’s a race to spot the next big star with social kudos as the prize; 2) there’s a genuine interest from the media to keep abreast of what is and isn’t working at youth level; 3) the ‘outrage generation’ are always looking for success or failure stories. As a result, there’s currently as much coverage and conversation about youth football than there ever has been.

However, Man United haven’t been coming out of it all very well. In the latest international break, somewhat inexplicably, there wasn’t a single United player in the England U20, U19, U18, U17 or U16 squads; Jesse Lingard in the U21s was the sole club representative in the national youth setup. The club’s non-participation in the UEFA Youth League and quarter final exit from the FA Youth Cup meant they’ve missed out on TV coverage and a chance to show off their top talents. The narrative at the start of the season was that United had forgotten about the club’s tradition of youth production and recent articles believe United are falling behind in that area.

It’s that time of year again when U18 players have their chance to shine in front of a bigger audience than usual and fans can speculate over which players should ‘make it’. United have been drawn at home to Port Vale or Bury in the 3rd Round of the FA Youth Cup and as ever, expectations will be high.

Andreas Pereira - a surprise addition to the first team?

There was one surprising inclusion in the Manchester United first team squad photo earlier this week. William Keane and Reece James who went on the summer tour weren’t included – both are now someway down the pecking order for their positions. Injured players such as Jones, Carrick, Lingard and Fellaini all took part along with young striker, James Wilson, who’s now very much with the first team. He was joined from the U21 squad, maybe somewhat surprisingly, by Andreas Pereira.

James Wilson, Manchester United
James Wilson impressed in his Manchester United debut towards the end of the 2013/14 season

The picture of new Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal, alongside Ryan Giggs and David Beckham is a reminder of how far we have come since both players made their debuts for the club. Giggs, now assistant manager at Old Trafford, made his debut against Everton in the 1990/91 season, whilst Beckham made his first appearance in the League Cup against Brighton in 92/93. The pair of them, along with a whole host of youngsters who grew into greatness, went onto lift title after title and in the case of Giggs helped the club to win two European Cups along the way.

How does the current batch of youngsters compare and is there any possibility of a break through star this season?
