Will David Moyes win a major trophy at Manchester United?
David Moyes - Manchester United manager
David Moyes ends his first season in charge of Manchester United without a major trophy

“This is a trophy for Sir Alex, so if he is sitting at home and watching today, this is for you Sir Alex and for the way your team performed last season and won the Premier League. The only way you get to the Charity Shield is by winning the league or the FA Cup, so Sir Alex’s team did that last year and the ones from now on will be hopefully for me to win.”
- David Moyes August 2013

Yes indeed. The Community Shield, the season opener between the previous league champions and the FA cup winners. A perfect start for David Moyes to get a taster or what it is like to win a trophy. They have been more entertaining ties down the years, most noticeably an Eric Cantona hattrick pre-King status, Kenneth Wolstenholme’s famous line on Bobby Chalrton’s excellent second goal against Spurs in 1967 (or even Pat Jennings goal in the same game!) and the bare chested Kevin Keegan and Billy Bremner going at it hammer and tong having been sent off for getting a big chunky Johnny Giles elbow. Yes, those were Community, or Charity, shield memories from yesteryear – which you could argue were far more memorable than the 2-0 victory over Wigan some eight months ago.

In the time that has elapsed, we’ve seen a ‘Moyes Out’ plane banner fly over Old Trafford during the 4-1 win over Aston Villa, United humbled at home by Manchester City and Liverpool and a number of uninspiring flat press conferences, where the manager focuses on ‘trying’ to win. The debate on Moyes always brings me back to this question – can you ever see, regardless of time, a Manchester United side managed by David Moyes winning a major trophy?

What do the numbers tell us about Januzaj’s best position? And what does he have in common with red legend, Cristiano Ronaldo? @Sleepy_Nik explains more …
There have been few Manchester United players to emerge from the opening half of the season with their reputations enhanced, but one such player is the Belgian sensation, Adnan Januzaj. His form has been the one shining light in a dark and dour start to David Moyes’ United career; form that suggests that the hype around the teenager from all quarters is fully justified.

How much can Manchester United expect of Adnan Januzaj?

In the space of about 10 minutes during the second half against Spurs, Wayne Rooney knocked at least 4 consecutive long balls out to Adnan Januzaj on the right wing. As we were chasing the equaliser it appeared that the youngest member of the team was the ‘go-to’ guy in a time of crisis.

With a team of internationals should we be placing so much expectation on a player still only 6 months into his first season with the first team?

What kind of effect could such demands have on his overall development?

It’s that time of year again – the FA Youth Cup focuses attention on the younger players at United and thrusts them into the limelight for hopefully the next few months. Last year United lost at this same stage, going down 4-3 at home to Burnley despite having the likes of Pearson, Januzaj, Daehli and Wilson all starting. There’s a chance for revenge though as the draw has thrown up Burnley once again, this time on away turf on Monday night.

Manchester United vs. Norwich: view from the oppo

Manchester United vs. Norwich: view from the oppo
Shinji Kagawa, Manchester United v Norwich
Shinji Kagawa scores a hattrick against Norwich for Manchester United in the fixture last March.

Norwich City have are unbeaten in the League Cup against Manchester United. Ok, the two clubs may have only met three times, a two legged semi final in 1975 (which ended as 2-2 at Old Trafford and 1-0 to Norwich at Carrow Road) and a 4-1 drubbing in the 3rd round away in East Anglia sixteen years before Adnan Januzaj was even born (bet that makes you feel old), but history is on the side of the Canaries. United hammered Norwich 4-0 in March, with a superb hattrick from Shinji Kagawa and an excellent long range effort by Wayne Rooney.

The fixture will surely give David Moyes a chance to rotate his side and give the likes if Zaha, and Hernandez a run out. United travel to struggling Fulham on Saturday afternoon and the Manchester United manager will want to ensure he has a full strength squad, so expect the likes of Rooney, van Persie and Carrick to be rested.

Why isn’t Adnan Januzaj in Man United’s Champions League squad?

Everyone wants everything immediately. There’s no patience in football anymore. Adnan Januzaj made an impressive league debut for United off the bench against 10-man Palace at the weekend but won’t be involved in United’s squad to face Leverkusen tomorrow. There’s plenty of logic and common sense behind that decision, not that you’d know if you logged into social media networks…

Wilfried Zaha: A view from a Crystal Palace fan

Wilfried Zaha: A view from a Crystal Palace fan
Wilfried Zaha
Wilfried Zaha looks to be a superb signing from Crystal Palace for Manchester United

As the Cesc Fabregas transfer debacle rolls on, Manchester United fans can be confident that Sir Alex Ferguson’s last ever signing looks to be a good one – with the talented Wilfried Zaha putting in some impressive performances in pre-season. Of course, I remember Djemba Djemba having a decent pre-season, but Zaha’s trickery and skill will have reds off their seats in anticipation.

We caught up with Nic Potter, a season ticket holder at Crystal Palace for twenty years who has seen the likes of Chris Armstrong, Attilio Lombardo and, erm, Thomas Brolin – grace the Selhurst Park turf. We put some questions to Nic and here is what he thinks of the talented youngster.

Every summer, football fans look to gossip columns, people who claim to have contacts, and repetitive sporting TV for clues as to how their team is going to be strengthened. For David Moyes, signings will no doubt be a big part of his summer but he’ll also have to make decisions on some of the more forgotten and unknown players.

The transfer of Mats Daehli makes no sense for club or player

In football, the logical seems to rarely happen. That United will produce good young players via the club’s academy has been a pretty safe exception to that rule until recent years. Fans will have watched players such as Eikrem, Morrison and Pogba stand out and yet before they’ve made any kind of mark on the first team, they’re off elsewhere for various reasons. That it’s happened again this summer with Mats Daehli is much more of a shock though.
