Lovenkrands shoots

AUTHOR: – Stretford-end

Manchester United failed to score at St James’ park for the first time since the 1999/2000 season to pick up a point in a 0-0 draw. Javier Hernandez and Wayne Rooney had great chances to open the scoring in the first half, whilst heavy Newcastle pressure early on created a number of chances after crosses from wide areas – including a Løvenkrands header just before half time. United stepped up their game in the second half and looked much the better side. Ryan Giggs spurned a glorious opportunity to open the scoring, whilst both sides had controversial penalty appeals turned turn. Here we discuss the talking points of the game and welcome both sets of fans to share their views.

Giggs vs. Newcastle
AUTHOR: – Doron

The disappointment of losing to Man City in the FA Cup can be firmly left in the past as United travel to Newcastle to try and open up a 9 point gap over Arsenal. Newcastle are nicely placed in mid-table but will be frightfully aware that they are by no means ‘safe’ yet. United’s recent record at St James’ Park is good but given the team’s away form this year, that could count for very little.

35 years

AUTHOR: – Doron

It’s 56 years since Man City beat United in the FA Cup, that was only a 4th round tie though. You have to go back 85 years to find the only previous meeting in the semi-final of this competition between these two side – City were victorious, winning 3-0 at Bramall Lane that day. Sticking with the years theme, City will be looking to reach their first FA Cup final since 1981 to give themselves a chance of ending the 35 year barren spell; whereas for United, the competition’s most successful side, a 4 year absence from the final would be ended. Oh, and these two sides happen to be pretty big rivals…

The merging of United’s midfield: present and future

Ryan Tunnicliffe looks on as Chelsea open the scoring

AUTHOR: – Herzog’s Child

There is a naivety amongst football supporters that the entrusting of youth will ease all prolonged concerns. Particularly now, as United’s midfield plunders on, an emphasis has been projected towards its young battalion, as those panicked by a middle blight lean aimlessly towards any semblance of hope. Cat-calls for the promotion of an impressive reserve have sounded regularly this season – a sad, if telling, tale of an issue too often presided over for the past two years. The truth, of course, is that United – as they did in the summer of ’09 – again failed to address its most problematic liability in the summer of last: its midfield. The reasons why they bypassed resolving the crisis can be anybody’s guess: lack of, ahem, ‘value,’ money, overall concern – take your pick. Or, indeed, perhaps they trusted that what they had was enough; which, despite our current position, has been somewhat disproved on too many occasions over the course of the campaign. There’s no need to relay. Those who have regularly provoked sighs have done so again this year, and those who we’ve relied on heavily before – the Carricks, the Fletchers – have too often trundled along. Yet, lost in the noise of anger, misplaced notions of promoting youth have sounded louder than ever before – which has not only highlighted the crumbling effect of our central pairings, but also, too, the naivety with which some willingly view the game though. As with all football brouhahas, the greatest casualties are sense and perspective, as pained calls fervently echo.

MUFC celebrate their second goal

AUTHOR: – Stretford-end and Doron

Manchester United booked a place in the semi finals of the European Cup after a 2-1 victory over Chelsea (3-1 on aggregate) at Old Trafford on Tuesday evening. United will play the winners of the tie between Schalke and Internazionale, although it will take a small miracle for the Italian and current European Champions to overcome their first leg deficit. Javier Hernandez and JI-Sung Park scored either side of Didier Drogba to give United a well earned victory against ten men Chelsea. Here we discuss the Talking Points of the game and encourage both United and fans to leave their thoughts on an eventual and thoroughly enjoyable game.

Terry slip

AUTHOR: – Doron

United or Chelsea are 90 minutes away from a Champions League semi final. United have a slim advantage having won the first leg away at Stamford Bridge 1-0 last week. This weekend just gone, Ferguson chose to rest 6 of the 11 who played last week (Rafael was injured and Rooney suspended) whilst Chelsea rested 4 of their 11 (Bosingwa was injured), so both sides should be fresh to hopefully produce another good game.

Berbatov celebrates scoring

AUTHOR: – Doron

Until Arsenal beat Blackpool yesterday, United had temporarily opened up a 10 point gap over their nearest challengers. Saturday’s 2-0 win over Fulham could best be described as ‘routine’ and ‘lackadaisical’ – nevertheless, it’s one more game chalked off and only six more remain now in the league.

Rooney vs Fulham
AUTHOR: – Doron

Manchester United have the chance to go 10 points clear of Arsenal who play on Sunday, if they beat Fulham tomorrow. Confidence is sky high after a mid-week Champions League win at Chelsea, but their own neighbours Fulham, lead by former Red Mark Hughes, will have other ideas as they try to reach the heights of 7th spot.
