So this is what a league defeat feels like?! First off, massive credit to Wolves for putting in a really good display – the purpose of this piece is obviously to analyse what United did right or wrong so the lack of focus on what Wolves did right shouldn’t take anything away from how they played. Talk of unbeaten records can now be put to bed. Despite taking an early lead through a great Nani strike, Wolves twice hit back in the first half with headed goals. A defeat away from home almost felt overdue but few would have predicted it would have come today; where did United go wrong then?

Manchester United 3-1 Aston Villa Talking Points

Posted on February 02, 2011  by nameonthetrophy  in Aston Villa, Doron, Man United, Match Reports, Premier League   2 Comments »

Wayne Rooney

AUTHOR: – Doron

Aston Villa’s poor record continued at Old Trafford showed no signs of changing as Man United swept them aside in a 3-1 win (a result that echoes our predicted score in the match preview for a change). Only last year a resolute Villa team kept United out at Old Trafford to win one nil but this time round United ensured that their home record for the season remained almost perfect – it’s now 37 points from a possible 39. Two goals from Wayne Rooney and a thunderous effort from captain Vidic also meant that a club record was equaled – the longest unbeaten run in the top flight. After tough away games at Blackpool and Southampton it was a welcome relief that last night was much more of a formality.

Agbonlahor scores the winner at Old Trafford
AUTHOR: – Doron

A resurgent Aston Villa come to Old Trafford having not lost a game in nearly a month. Whilst they’re still closer to the bottom of the table than the top, the club under Houllier are finally starting to move in the right direction. Meanwhile United’s unbeaten league run continue and their home form is pretty ominous for the visiting Villa side.

Blackpool 2-3 Manchester United Talking Points

United celebrate

The last time the two sides met in the top flight was way back in the 1970/71 season, when the score finished 1-1. Denis Law was the scorer that day, in what turned out to be the penultimate match of the season, which didn’t really mean much to either side. Blackpool were already doomed to relegation and United finished in 8th spot, trailing league champions Arsenal by 22 points. Fast forward forty years and you will have witnessed one of the most entertaining matches of the whole season. Blackpool took a two goal lead before Manchester United fought back in typical Ferguson style to rescue all three points. As usual we assess the talking points below.

United vs. West Hame
One would think Manchester United is capable of taking all three points from the newly-promoted Blackpool, yet that away curse still looms large ahead of United’s journey to Bloomfield Road. Most were shocked when Blackpool earned promotion in the Championship play-off last season, and now they’re exceeding expectations in the Premier League. The Seasiders are currently 11th in the table, six points out of the relegation zone.

Manchester United 5-0 Birmingham City Talking Points

Posted on January 23, 2011  by Stretford-end  in Birmingham City, Man United, Match Reports, Premier League   3 Comments »

Berbatov and Giggs

The last Birmingham City player to score at Old Trafford in a league match was Frank Worthington back in the 1981/82 season, therefore it was no surprise to see United run out emphatic winners yesterday. United drew 1-1 at St Andrews in the last game of 2011 following a last minute strike from Lee Bowyer after Dimitar Berbatov gave United the lead. Another Berbatov hat-trick, two more Rooney assists (taking him to ten for the whole season) and a wonderful goal involving Berbatov, Rooney and Giggs. Here we assess the ‘talking points’ from the game and welcome any comments from both United and Birmingham City fans.

Rooney vs Birmingham

Two teams with contrasting fortunes go head to head at Old Trafford tomorrow. Birmingham are the visitors and they sit rather uncomfortably in 16th, just one point off the relegation zone and three points off the bottom of the table. This is a fixture that United should be comfortable with, it’s 6 wins from 6 against Birmingham at Old Trafford in the Premier League.

Eric Cantona – The Legacy…

Eric Cantona and Alex Ferguson

I would like to introduce Bricki, The Stretty Rant’s brand new blogger, who has put together his account on our legendary Frenchman Eric Cantona. I’m sure you’ll give Bricki a warm welcome and comment on his excellent first piece….

It’s now been 13 years since Eric Cantona left Manchester United in much the same way he arrived, a whirlwind. As Eric has started to reappear on British TV screens, in adverts for Sky Sports and L’Oreal, the time feels right to reflect on Cantona’s time in England and the impressions he left behind. Cantona’s arrival at Leeds was preceded by Graeme Souness turning down the chance to sign him while Liverpool manager and Cantona walking out on Trevor Francis at Sheffield Wednesday after being requested to stay another week on trial.

Tottenham Hotspur vs. Manchester United Match Preview

Tottenham
Another dreaded away fixture. Granted, the away curse has subsided slightly with the New Years Day win at West Brom, but Tottenham Hotspur is an entirely different nemesis. It has been a crazy season which has seen Tottenham surpass defending Champions Chelsea in the Premier League for a place in the top four. There is positive news ahead of the journey to North London though. Wayne Rooney, Nemanja Vidic, Paul Scholes, and Edwin van der Sar are all in contention for Sunday’s fixture against Spurs after spells on the sideline.

Tactical view – Fletcher and wide play key to United beating Stoke

Posted on January 04, 2011  by nameonthetrophy  in Doron, Man United, Match Reports, Premier League, Stoke City, Tactics   No Comments »

Fletcher

Despite as Yolkie describes in his match report a “laboured” win over Stoke for me there were two key reasons why United won. Firstly, Darren Fletcher and secondly United’s successful wide play.
