There have been several positive aspects regarding Manchester United’s pre-season tour so far.
The Red Devils have won their three games so far in tour, which is exciting to see. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men have looked impressive on both sides of the ball, and are yet to concede a goal in three fixtures thus far. Manchester United defeated Perth Glory (2-0), Leeds United (4-0) and Inter Milan (1-0).
One of the standout players so far has been Mason Greenwood. The striker has been United’s top scorer in the pre-season tour with two goals in three outings, including the game-winning strike against Inter in the most recent match. And the 17-year-old has been showing everyone he is exactly the kind of player everyone thought he was.
An up-and-coming star looking for his chance
Solskjaer’s has always raved about Greenwood’s ability and potential. The striker already debuted in the Premier League last season, and all signs indicate he is going to be part of the senior team during the upcoming 2018-19 season. Make no mistake here: Greenwood fully deserves a chance in the first team.
His strike against Inter was an absolute thing of beauty, and we can see it here:
However, Greenwood’s impressive run of form has not been something that happened overnight. The 17-year-old striker is coming off a huge 2018-19 season, notching 31 goals in 30 U18 Premier League appearances. If we count all competitions, including the EPL and the Champions League, Greenwood registered 42 goals and 12 assists in 49 outings.
Where does Greenwood fit in Manchester United’s future?
There’s no question the English forward has a role at Old Trafford going forward. He’s only 18 years old and all signs indicate he’s ready to make the leap to the senior side. But on the other side, Greenwood needs to play regularly if he wants to fulfill his potential. After all, no one wants him to become another Federico Macheda.
If Manchester United part ways with Romelu Lukaku, then adding Greenwood to the senior squad would be the best thing. But if Lukaku stays in the club and knowing Marcus Rashford will remain as the starter, then Greenwood would benefit from a season in the reserve squad.
But make no mistake. He will be an important part of the side sooner than later. And he has done enough during pre-season to show he already belongs in the senior side right now.
