Manchester United might be preparing for one of their more important matches of this part of the season, as they travelled to Seville to play Sevilla in Champions League round of 16 first leg. Yet, the club must be thinking more into the future than the squad itself, as this coming summer transfer window will be a frenzy one.

The main reason for that is the World Cup and the shorter transfer window for English clubs, as it will end in early August due to the start of new Premier League season. Here are five players Manchester United must try and buy this summer if there is the slightest chance of doing so.

Thiago Alcantara

This would be an absolutely amazing buy. Thiago Alcantara first broke into professional football as part of Barcelona, while he fully established himself as part of Bayern Munich. He worked with Pep Guardiola at both of those clubs and he really is a player that fits his mould. Yet, with a player like him playing alongside Matic and Pogba, United would have a midfield trio of three completely different players, which would be a great positive. Not even to mention the quality he would bring to the team. Why would he leave Munich? Alcantara has been there for the past five years and the Premier League could be a new challenge for the 26-year old.7

Toby Alderweireld

We already wrote about the Belgian centre-back as it was reported his relationship with Mauricio Pochettino is not what it used to be. If that is the case – or even if it is not – United must try and lure him up north. Alderweireld would no doubt become a leader of the central defence, as he would bring quality, great style and security to the whole team. With Bailly as his partner, Manchester United could then focus on other parts of the pitch. Why would he join Manchester United? Chasing Premier League and Champions League is something that will be easier to achieve in Manchester than Tottenham, even though Spurs are playing some incredible football.

Sergej Milinkovic-Savic

We wrote so many times about him, but he is simply impossible to leave out of this conversation. A player that is very similar to Paul Pogba would be a great buy because of his height, strength, technical prowess, dynamism and incredible talent. However, there would be some question marks here. First is that United would have to pay incredible amount of money for a soon-to-be 23-year old. With World Cup coming soon, his price could rise even more if he plays well with Serbia, while that would also mean another central midfielder would be tough to get.

Mateo Kovacic

Another player from the region of former Yugoslavia and another technical central midfielder. Kovacic might not be Alcantara, but he is also a player of high quality who simply cannot be a starter when his teammates are Toni Kross and fellow countrymen Luka Modric. That could be a plus for United to get a technically gifted central midfielder who would give new options to Mourinho. Real Madrid might be tough to break, but with Manchester United offering Premier League glamour and place in the starting XI, Kovacic could be tempted to leave Spain’s capital.
