As it happens in every single transfer window, Manchester United have been linked with several potential transfers. Names such as Lucas Moura, Danny Rose, and Antoine Griezmann have been tipped to move to Old Trafford. However, there is a chance none of these players end up featuring for the club any time soon.

One of the most interesting names that has been linked with a move to United comes from Scotland, though. Manchester United have been rumoured to be targeting a new left-back in case the club decides to part ways with Luke Shaw. And one name that has been mentioned of late is the one of Kieran Tierney. The Celtic defender is expected to become one of the best left-backs in Europe sooner than later. Honestly, there is no question he would be an interesting addition to the side.

But let’s take a closer look at Tierney’s playing style and characteristics. It remains to be seen whether he can adapt to the Premier League or not, but one thing is certain. At least on paper, he looks like a signing that could turn out to be very good for the long-term picture.

A quick look at Tierney’s scouting report

First of all, let’s discuss a bit more about who is this left-back everyone seems to be talking about of late. Tierney comes from Isle of Man, but represents Scotland and has been tipped to captain the side sooner than later. He has unquestionable leadership skills. Tierney has already captained Celtic despite the fact he is only 20 years old. And fans shouldn’t mistake him for a weak player, as he is very strong despite being just 1.78 meters tall.

Tierney is under contract with Celtic under 2023, so any team that wants to sign him will have pay a substantial transfer fee to acquire him. And if we consider he has already been capped nine times by Scotland, it is clear that an international career awaits for him, too.

Tierney’s biggest calling card is his defence, but he can operate on a more advanced role if needed since he can thrive going forward. But he would be better suited to play as a left-back in case he joins United. He has enough potential to become the next Patrice Evra. However, he is versatile enough to play at right-back if needed too. But his best role lies on the left side of the pitch.

How much would he cost?

Transfermarkt has Tierney’s value sitting at €2M, but Celtic are reportedly asking for €xM to even start negotiations. The numbers back Tierney’s impressive season, though. He has three goals and seven assists in 36 appearances across all competitions. Those are very good numbers for a 20-year-old, especially considering he is a defender.

Playing for Celtic has allowed him to play against some of the best players in the world. Without going any further, he already battled against the likes of Neymar and Arjen Robben during the UEFA Champions League this season. But as stated above, Tierney can also operate on a more attacking role. His pace and technique make him a real asset, moving forward and exploiting space intelligently, and invariably producing a quality cross or pass at the end of any move.
