Transfer Talk: Manchester United Set To Join Race For Leon Goretzka

Manchester United might be at the top of the English Premier League standings. However, The Red Devils remain active on the transfer market and are always looking at alternatives to further bolster the side on the short-term and long-term scenario. And now they have been linked with a move for Leon Goretzka.

The Schalke 04 star will become a free agent at the end of the current campaign, and it is not a secret he will leave his current club in order to join a bigger side. Bayern Munich have been linked with a move for him for quite a while, but all transfer plans might remain on hold until the team unveils their new manager. FC Barcelona also considered an approach for him, but have reportedly pulled out of the race. And United have now emerged as a viable alternative to make a move for the 22-year-old Germany international.

Goretzka has been turning heads with his play in the Bundesliga for quite some time. He is one of the leaders in Schalke 04, and has proven his worth time and time again. But he took another step in his development during the summer, as he was one of the best players in the Germany squad that won the 2017 Confederations Cup. He seems ready to take on a bigger role with the National Team, and right now he is a lock to make the 2018 World Cup roster.

Goretzka’s Playing Style And Projections

Goretzka’s playing style is quite simple. He is the typical central midfielder who profiles best as a playmaker, although he is quite versatile. He can operate on a deep role as a second central midfielder, or a few meters more advanced as an attacking midfielder. The 22-year-old has been playing as the latter on Schalke, but he would fit better as a CM at Manchester United. Can you imagine, for instance, a CM duo of Goretzka next to Nemanja Matic or Marouane Fellaini?

As stated above, United will have to battle hard to sign him. Many experts believe Goretzka is keen to stay in Germany to join Bayern Munich, but we never know. Perhaps Jose Mourinho can convince him, especially if we consider how good United has been this season. And since he is only 22 years old, he lines perfectly with other young stars on the team such as Eric Bailly, Anthony Martial, Marcus Rashford, Romelu Lukaku and Paul Pogba.

There is no doubt that Goretzka will be expensive. And it would not be surprising to see United engage in a bidding war with Bayern, Real Madrid, or any other team that might want to sign him. But at the same time, Goretzka has enough potential to be one of the best central midfielders in the world. He has already drawn comparisons to Toni Kroos, and has an even higher ceiling than the Real Madrid star.

Goretzka might never arrive to Old Trafford, and there is a chance this is nothing more than a rumour. But the chance is there. And if that happens, United should everything they can to acquire him. He looks like a game-changing talent with a style that is tailor-made for the English Premier League.
