Renato Sanches has been linked with a big money transfer to Manchester United

Reports over the last few days have suggested that Renato Sanches will make a big summer move from Benfica to Manchester United following an impressive season in the Primeira Liga. Sanches, still only 18 years old, is one of Europe’s hottest properties and will be a welcomed addition to an ageing Manchester United midfield. Benfica’s young prodigy has a superb engine to get about the pitch, both from a counter attacking perspective and from intercepting the ball when the opposition are on the attack. He is also not afraid to have a shot from outside the box, scoring a wonder goal against Academica – his first professional goal.

The Guardian recently published their top ten footballers in demand under the age of 23, with Renato Sanches ranked second behind Remes wonder kid Ousmane Dembélé. Sanches has scored two goals in 23 appearances so far for Benfica, in what is his debut season. The Portuguese midfielder will most likely be part of the Euro 2016 squad and has two caps, having made his debut against Bulgaria.

Why United will halt Leicester City's title party this afternoon

The youngster has an enormous release clause of £43million and United will want to ensure they are purchasing a player who can stamp his authority in the United midfield for years to come. Fans will remember a big money move for the Brazilian midfielder Anderson in late spring of 2007 for a reported £19million from FC Porto. Although Anderson, the winner of the player of the tournament award at the Fifa under-17 world championship in 2005, had a impressive debut season in England – he failed to deliver on numerous occasions and was eventually given a free transfer to Internacional.

Benfica are currently top of their league, two points clear of FC Porto with two games left to play. A league title win and decent showing at Euro 2016 will cement Sanches’ reputation as one of the top talents in European football and United will face stiff competition from Arsenal, Real Madrid, Paris Saint-Germain, Bayern Munich and Manchester City for the youngster’s signature.
