Manchester United Part Ways with Greenwood After Internal Review
Manchester United have announced that Mason Greenwood will not return to the team following the conclusion of their internal investigation. The investigation, which began in February 2023 after all criminal charges against Greenwood were dropped, has now been completed. The club issued the following statement: “Manchester United has concluded its internal investigation into the allegations made against Mason Greenwood. Our review began after the Crown Prosecution Service discontinued the charges against Mason. Throughout this process, we have considered the views and rights of the alleged victim, as well as our club’s standards and values. We aimed to gather comprehensive information and context, approaching the matter with sensitivity and care, including seeking evidence not publicly available from those with direct knowledge of the case.
“Based on the evidence, we determined that the online material did not fully represent the situation and that Mason did not commit the offences he was initially accused of. However, Mason acknowledges that he has made mistakes and is taking responsibility for them. Recognising the challenges involved in Mason restarting his career at Manchester United, we have mutually agreed that it is in everyone’s best interest for him to continue his career away from Old Trafford. We will work with Mason to facilitate this transition.”
Greenwood, who has been suspended since January 2023, must now seek a new club to continue his professional career. The charges of rape, assault, and coercive and controlling behaviour that were levelled against him in October were dropped by the Crown Prosecution Service in February. Although there was speculation that Greenwood might return to United, recent backlash led to a reversal of this decision.
Fiorentina Open Door for Amrabat Transfer
Fiorentina have confirmed they will not obstruct Sofyan Amrabat’s potential transfer this summer. Amrabat has been linked with Manchester United throughout the transfer window, and with only a week remaining, it remains to be seen if United will submit an official offer for the Moroccan international. Liverpool have also shown interest in Amrabat, and Fiorentina appear open to negotiations. Fiorentina’s Joe Barone stated, “We are always ready for entries and exits. If someone is not satisfied, we can accommodate them before the transfer window closes,” according to Labaro Viola. With Amrabat’s contract set to expire next summer, this window represents Fiorentina’s last opportunity to secure a significant transfer fee for the midfielder. Given United’s need for an additional combative presence alongside Casemiro, Amrabat’s potential move could address a critical gap in the squad. Notably, Amrabat was not utilised in Fiorentina’s recent match, remaining an unused substitute.
