Manchester United have won their previous four Premier League matches and now it is turn for some FA Cup action. The rivals are Reading and it will be a good opportunity to book the place in fourth round of this iconic competition. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has already chosen his squad for this match and just a glance at it shows us there will be some changes in the team.
That is to be expected after a run of festive fixtures. These runs are never easy on the legs and the manager will know that very well. The league is not going to be in focus this weekend, so let’s see what we want to see from Man United in this match.
Rotation, Rotation, Rotation
We want rotation, you got that part already. Manchester United need rotating and there will be some interesting players in the matchday squad. Garner will be in contention to come on and show himself to the fans, while Scott McTominay has been out of the team for a while now. Also, David De Gea is not in the squad and Sergio Romero is to be expected in goal.
But there is another good reason for rotation and that is the opposition. After 26 matches, Reading sit in 23rd place in the Championship. They have won just 20 points so far and this past weekend they conceded four goals at home against Swansea City after just 48 minutes of play. They are a poor side in a total mess and Man United should not have a lot of problems to beat them comfortably.
Lukaku On The Wing
And when that is the case already, why not try something new? If you have been reading us this season, you probably noticed we are advocates of Romelu Lukaku playing on the right wing. It does not have to be anything definitive, but why not give it a go? We have seen Lukaku play on the right wing for Belgium in Russia this past summer and he truly enjoyed it.
Not only that, but Solskjaer might feel it would be wrong to move Marcus Rashford from the centre-forward position right now. He has been incredible in the past month and his performances are showing what a player he could turn into. So, maybe try with Lukaku on the right wing and with Rashford up top and see where that goes. It is Reading after all – Lukaku and Rashford are a lot of fire power to play with against the Royals.
Pereira And Fred In The Middle
We were thinking and we realized that Pereira is probably not going to turn out well at Man United. But he is still a fine player. A really good performance from central midfield could make his stock rise and the club could actually earn some nice money on him, if he is not going to play anyway.
And then there is Fred. The other Brazilian just got here last summer and he needs playing time. He could still turn out to be a decent signing, but the time is slowly running out.
