Manchester United prepare for another Premier League match, as West Bromwich Albion are set to visit Old Trafford on Sunday afternoon. The match will be a chance for the Red Devils to get closer to their goal of reaching the second place and making sure Manchester City still have to wait on their promotion into Premier League champions.

However, the new details off the pitch have been emerging in English media. Express reports that Manchester United are prepared to hijack Manchester City’s plans to sign the Brazilian midfielder Fred. He is Shakhtar Donetsk’s player who has been linked with Pep Guardiola’s side for several months.

Who Is Fred?

The Belo Horizonte born player is 25 years and is playing for the Ukrainian side since 2013. In his five years at the club, Fred has made 93 domestic league appearances, as well as several participations in the UEFA Champions League. He is 169 centimeters tall and his best position is in central midfield.

In terms of his position, Fred should be monitored by Manchester United as they are looking for new players in that position. Michael Carrick is set to retire, while Marouane Fellaini is expected to leave the club when his contract expires. Therefore, in terms of position, Fred fits that mold.

This season, Fred has played 17 matches in Ukrainian league, while also featuring in all of Shakhtar’s eight Champions League matches. His team were unlucky to get knocked-out by Roma on away goals in the first knockout round. Fred is not expected to stay in Donetsk anymore, after five seasons at the club.

He is now 25 and approaching his peak years and a transfer to Premier League would be good for him. His technical ability is of very high quality and no wonder Manchester City were interested in him. If United are too, then that would open some questions. Most of them would be in regard of the style Jose Mourinho would impose next season, as Fred is not a player to be sitting alongside Nemanja Matic and simply stop opposition attacks.

The Brazilian is much more than that, as his passing is very good and he is able to produce chances for his team-mates as well. It really would be interesting to see how that would work out, especially if United could get themselves a good player and stop City from buying him, as well.

Doping Scandal

However, Fred has been known for his doping scandal in 2015. When he was at 2015 Copa America with Brazil – for whose national team he has played seven matches – Fred’s tested positive on the diuretic hydrochlorothiazide, which was found in his sample.

Since then, Fred was part of a process that was 18 months long and in the end he was found guilty and punished from playing at international level until July 2017.

This could be looked at as something very negative for a player in Manchester United shirt. It is probably unlikely to expect the board of the Devils in getting into an adventure of signing Fred and looking for other options could be a sensible decision.
