Manchester United could be on the verge of adding one of the defenders in England in the coming days. And even though the deal might never happen, it never hurts to look at what a potential signing might bring to the club. This is the case with Danny Rose, who would be open to a move to Old Trafford if he decides to leave Tottenham Hotspur.
Why would Rose want to leave the Spurs? It all resides on the club’s recent transfer activity. Rose is disappointed with Tottenham’s lack of activity, and he would be open to move for a contender. In fact, Chelsea and Manchester United would be his two prefered destinations. And with that in mind, it never hurts to analyse what could the 27-year-old add to The Red Devils.
Current Depth On the Squad
We could say the left-back role is a position of strength for Manchester United this season.
Jose Mourinho has Matteo Darmian as the starter, but there are other options who can fill the role if needed. Luke Shaw is a natural fit, and he remains a talented player even if he hasn’t played much over the past two years. Daley Blind can also play at LB. Marcos Rojo fits there as well, but the Argentinian won’t return until 2017 due to a knee injury.
Adding Rose to the team would make the defensive line far deeper, and it could create decent possibilities for Mourinho. First of all, Shaw could become expendable. Why would Mourinho want him when he has Darmian, Blind, the return of Rojo and the potential arrival of Rose? Playing time would be scarce for the former Southampton man. It would be better to loan him so he can get first-team opportunities elsewhere.
So yes, Rose would be an upgrade in a position of strength for United. That says a lot about his quality.
What Could He Add To The Side?
Rose is considered the best left back in England, and one of the best in the Premier League. He is a threat going forward, works hard defensively, and can adapt to several tactical systems. In fact, he dazzled last season when Tottenham opted to play with a three-man defensive line.
All those traits would be useful for United. He would certainly be an upgrade over Darmian, and it would be easy to see him as the starting LB as soon as he joins the club. It would increase the team’s depth, as Darmian and Antonio Valencia would have to battle for the RB role.
On top of making the team deeper defensively, Rose represents much more to the club. It would mean that world-class players are looking at United as a potential destination once again. And while calling Rose “world-class” can be considered exaggereated by some, he is one of the best left-backs in the world. And at 27, he is entering his prime years. United haven’t had a world-class left back in a while now, and Rose would fix that problem.
What Are The Chances Of Signing Him?
This is where things get tricky. Rose is under contract with Tottenham, and the Spurs are not likely to sell him cheap. Especially if we consider that United and Tottenham are direct rivals for a Top Four finish this season. Or maybe Rose does not want to leave, and is only doing this to spark a plug in his current team.
It will be tough to land him, that’s not a secret. But United should attack the chance if it arises. Quality defenders are not available on the market just like that, and if the player wants to come, that’s a plus. There is no question United would be a stronger team defensively if Rose joins the club.
