Patrice Evra has signed a new long-term contact at Manchester United that will see him remain at the club until at least 2014. There has been lots of speculation this season about Evra going to Spain to Real Madrid but this would appear to put all that to bed
Evra signs new deal with United
Evra joined United five years ago and after a forgettable debut against Man City he was hauled off at half-time and infamously told by Ferguson, “Mr Evra, now just watch and see what is English football. And learn”; he’s gone on to become arguably one of the best left backs in the world. It’s impossible to rank where he comes in terms of the club’s best ever but certainly under Ferguson he’s every bit as good as any other left back there’s been.
At the time of signing, Evra has played 226 times and scored three goals. He’s often outspoken and frequently pleads his love for the club, “From the moment I arrived here it felt like it was my destiny, because it was only when I became a United player that I found my true identity. This place suited my character” – it’s one of the reasons why fans like him so much. You can read the full interview from May 2010 here.
Signing this new deal will hopefully end stories linking the player to Real Madrid. In November the The Mirror claimed that Evra wanted to leave – other news sources jumped on the story too. More recently media reports have been suggesting replacements for Evra.
Speaking to manutd.com, Evra has said:
“Ever since I arrived at United, it’s been a dream come true playing here. The fans, the players, the manager and the staff all work hard to make this club the best in the world. I’ve won a lot in the last five years, but I want to win more and I know that’s the mentality of everyone here.”
Sir Alex Ferguson added:
“Patrice has developed into a key character in the dressing room. It’s great that he’s committed himself to Manchester United. His experience and talent will be increasingly important to us.”
Ferguson also describes Evra as “unquestionably one of the world’s best left backs”.

he’s the best left back in the world. Some people think ashley cole but I don’t think he’s even England’s best – Leighton Baines is.
Ashley Cole at his best might edge Evra, but not by much. But how often has Cole been at his best recently?
Evra is probably the best in the world.
Actually no, I can’t pick one over the other. I’ll say the two of them at their best are equally good.
