Giggs and Scholes
Manchester United legends Paul Scholes and Ryan Giggs to stay on for another year?

It’s that time of the year when the future of some of United’s older players usually becomes a bit clearer. With the policy of offering only one year deals in place, there are obvious doubts every year about the likes of Giggs, Scholes and now Ferdinand. Who’s likely to be kept on and maybe more importantly, who should be kept on?

First off, from all of us at the Stretty Rant, we’d like to wish you a Happy New Year. Thanks for reading, and we hope you have a happy, safe and prosperous 2013.

Manchester United start 2013 with a trip to Wigan Athletic, hoping to extend an 8-game unbeaten run in the league (7 wins, 1 draw) which sees them enter the year seven points ahead of City at the top of the league. In this season’s reverse fixture, United comfortably beat the Latics at Old Trafford. 4-0 was the scoreline that day, our biggest margin of victory this season – Alex Büttner had a goal, an assist and a clean sheet on his début, and Nick Powell also scored in his first league appearance. In other news, Wigan look set to take young United forward Angelo Henriquez on loan until the end of the season.

Spurs came to Old Trafford with that familiar feeling of impending doom – it’s not been a happy place for them to visit for a generation now. That said, depending on Fergie’s team selection they may be forgiven for thinking things might be about to change – United’s midfield has too often been there for the taking and Spurs have some powerful options in that area. As ever, we welcome comments from both sets of fans.

United travelled down to the south coast to renew a rivalry with Southampton that has produced some epic battles over the years. Southampton were yet to win a game or register a point this season whilst United lost their opening away game at Everton. This time around there’d not be a grey kit in sight but United and Ferguson still had surprises in store.

United's central midfield - is a signing really needed?

It seems that this will be the fifth summer in a row that United have failed to invest in arguably the most crucial area of any team, central midfield. Not since Anderson and Hargreaves were brought in have additions been made – Cleverley has emerged and Giggs has redefined his role but otherwise the personnel remain unchanged. For many United fans, this has been something of an ongoing problem and going into the summer, once again, the hope was that we’d strengthen. Having spent close to £40m so far, a central midfield signing seems unlikely, but why?
