Phil Jones has been in great form but picked up an ankle injury in the victory over Reading

Manchester United are through to the quarter finals of the FA Cup after a 2-1 victory over Reading at Old Trafford, however Phil Jones picked up an ankle injury as was seen leaving Old Trafford on crutches. Jones, who was excellent in the 1-1 draw in Madrid, rolled his ankle in a tackle on Reading captain Jobi McAnuff and was replaced by Nani just before half time. The versatile youngster will be hoping it is only strained ankle ligaments as United enter the business end of the season.

United travelled to Wigan aiming to finish the busy festive fixture schedule unbeaten and with a win. The DW Stadium, so often a three points banker for United, held unpleasant memories from last season and United would be keen to ensure the same errors weren’t repeated. Wigan have been flirting dangerously with the relegation places once again after just one win in their previous seven games. Fergie recalled Rafael, Ferdinand, Giggs, van Persie and Hernandez to the starting line up. As ever, we welcome comments from both sets of fans.

United’s struggle at Newcastle last season was fresh in the minds of fans and probably players ahead of the annual trip to St James’ Park. United’s form has been patchy and following the defeat against Spurs last weekend, a response was needed. Newcastle had defensive injuries and were missing their first choice goalkeeper as well as both centre backs. Still, their front six meant that this was a game that couldn’t be taken lightly. Time is running out for Evans’ declared one reputable newspaper columnist in the aftermath of United’s 6-1 defeat recently; many other media outlets decreed that Evans’ selection was akin to nihilistic exuberance by the manager, Sir Alex Ferguson, and the main cause of defeat (a more thorough reflection can be found here on this last point). Yet the evidence seems to depict a rather different story altogether, with Evans the most natural and talented centre half to rise from the youth academy since Wes Brown – and without the injury record at that. In fact, at the tender age of 23 years old, time is seemingly in vast abundance for Jonny Evans.

The difficult second album followed by the ‘concept’ album, every band/singer seems to go through this process. Promoted clubs tend to suffer from ‘second season’ syndrome, notable examples are Hull, Sunderland and West Brom.

So it is that players seem to have the same problems when establishing themselves in a squad. One player who has just been through his difficult ‘second season’ is Jonny Evans. Whilst not officially his second season, it has been the inevitable ‘dip’ that players have once they burst onto the scene.

As the club looks to invest in youth and create the next generation of team what can we expect from Jonny Evans?
