Was Louis van Gaal too harsh on Adnan Januzaj against Villa?

Adnan Januzaj scores the only goal of the game but came under fire from Louis van Gaal

Many reds were pleased to see Adnan Januzaj back in the starting xi and even more so to see him slotted in behind Wayne Rooney in the number ten role. Eyebrows are still being raised at the logic of playing Juan Mata, who is blessed with a beautiful pass but not so much in terms of pace, out wide on the right – but it was a welcome return for United’s young prodigy, who hadn’t started a game since February of this year.

Januzaj’s goal was the first for a United player this season and it was some goal, despite the deflection along the way. A run from a central position to wide left, he was perfectly found by Juan Mata, before sending former Manchester City defender Micah Richards sliding along on his backside after a drag back before slotting home. The forward also showed some great close control, but was criticised following the match regarding his ball retention. So, was Louis van Gaal too harsh on United’s young star?

David De Gea missing again as United travel to Aston Villa

Manchester United look to continue their winning start to the season as they travel to Aston Villa. The home side are also buoyant after beating newly promoted Bournemouth on the opening day. All the talk before the game will be whether David De Gea will remain at Manchester United following the revelation from Louis van Gaal the goalkeeper is “not eager to play”. The Spaniard’s future is uncertain following interest from Real Madrid all summer and with his contract up next summer, United could look to cash in – if the price is right. Romero, who started last weekend against Tottenham, will replace De Gea tonight in goal. Marouane Fellaini is still serving a suspension following his sending off against Hull City at the end of last season whilst Phil Jones is still out injured.

United picked up four points against Aston Villa last season, drawing 1-1 at Villa Park and then beating Villa 3-1 at Old Trafford in the return fixture. Can United improve their performance from the opening fixture against Spurs OR will United’s slow start continue?

What a difference a fortnight makes; the journey to Old Trafford for the previous home league match against Spurs had been filled with apprehension and anxiety that the season would end on a downward trajectory following the whimper against Arsenal in the FA Cup earlier that week. The subsequent victories against Spurs and Liverpool not only gave United a cushion in the ‘rat race’ for the top four but felt like Van Gaal’s side had suddenly gone from 2nd gear to 5th.

Gone was the hesitant, nervous football on evidence over the majority of the season to date, replaced by a United side playing with pace, confidence and aggression. For the first time in a long time, the walk to the ground was filled with the expectation, rather than hope, of a home win and good performance. The new found confidence proved well founded as United recorded a fifth straight league win with another encouraging performance.

Juan Mata scores for Manchester United against Aston Villa last season

Following the international break, in form Manchester United welcome Aston Villa to Old Trafford in what will be the 184th clash between the two sides. Villa are struggling at the wrong end of the table, but have recently picked up under new manager Tim Sherwood with an important win over fellow relegation battlers, Sunderland. Villa fans can also look forward to an FA Cup semi-final clash against Liverpool or Blackburn Rovers but the main focus will be on Premier League survival and three point at Old Trafford.

United are in good form, beating Tottenham and a superb 2-1 win against Liverpool over the past few weeks, which has opened a gap between United in fourth spot. Juan Mata and Marouane Fellaini are in fine form and both are expected to start against Villa,

Juan Mata scored his first goal for United yesterday. If you didn’t celebrate that, you have no soul.
Mata celebrates: “Wayne’s shaved and I haven’t, so you can’t notice we resemble each other a bit!”
Also: Fellaini kinda looks like he’s doing a “Blue Steel” pose, but for a different camera.

Manchester United scored a slightly-flattering 4-1 home win over Aston Villa on Saturday. Villa opened the scoring through a decent Ashley Westwood free kick. “That’ll teach ya to stop confusing me with the golfer Lee Westwood!” he’s reported to have thought to himself while celebrating. United equalised through a Rooney header while Villa were exhibiting their patented “FIFA ’99 Amateur mode” defensive tactics, and United eased on to victory from there, showing a bit of the bounce-back-ability for which the club was is famous. I wanted to make an Alan Partridge reference here, as it’s quite appropriate – think “give me a second season!” – but sadly I’ve given up Alan Partridge references for Lent.*

Phil Jones scores against Aston Villa

Manchester United haven’t lost to Aston Villa in the league at Villa Park since 1995/96

Manchester United travel to Villa Park today hoping to bounce back from two home league defeat, both 1-0 losses to Everton and Newcastle United. United have also been dealt a massive blow with Robin van Persie missing the busy Christmas period with a thigh strain.

United were involved in a cracker of a game last year at Villa Park, winning the match 3-2 having been two goals down. Mexican striker Javier Hernandez scored a brace to claim all three points despite an impressive Aston Villa display. David Moyes will take the same again today.

Despite playing in the late game on Saturday, United knew they could go four points clear at the top with Chelsea and Man City playing in tough games on Sunday. United’s record at Villa Park is famously good – a traditional football stadium with a good atmosphere. Villa’s youthful team would have other ideas though and are trying to get away from the bottom quarter of the table. We welcome comments from both sets of supporters.

Manchester United travel to Aston Villa, marking the start of four away games in a row for the league leaders. With Champions League qualification assured, focus now is on staying top for as long as possible, particularly with rivals facing each other this weekend. Villa know they can’t drop into the relegation zone regardless of the score but will want to pull away from the dangerous territory they find themselves in. We welcome comments from both sets of fans.

United came away with 3 points from a tricky trip to Villa Park, but importantly seem to be finding an extra gear at last. Jones scored the all-important goal, and there was another clean-sheet, which will please Ferguson. Here are the talking points to come out of the game; we welcome both Villa and United fans to get involved in some discussion.
