Scouting Next Man United Opposition: Partizan Want The 1966 Repeat

Manchester United have travelled to Belgrade, for the Europa League clash against Partizan in the third round of group stages. The match in Serbia’s capital could be a very interesting one, as United will be without some important players and Partizan have also won four points in the first two matches.

Man United’s next opponent has not started the season very well in Serbian Superliga, although their qualification to Europa League has seen them very satisfied. They also want to reach the knockout stages of this competition and they will want to stage an upset on Thursday.

Their head coach is Savo Milosevic, former Aston Villa striker. He has made this team play more fluid, pacey football, which is something that teams in Serbia usually lack. His usual formation is a 4-2-3-1 and it will be pretty much easy to guess which players will play. That is what happens when a team does not have as great depth as it maybe wants.

How Are They Doing In Europa League?

So far in Europa League, Partizan are doing very well, although they will be unhappy about their first match. They played against AZ Alkmaar in Belgrade and were trailing 1-0, but then managed to turn it around, get a 2-1 lead with an extra man. But the team’s attacking carelessness led to them conceding and getting just a point when they had all three in their hands.

The second match was better, as Partizan defeated Astana in Kazakhstan 2-1. The Serbian Cup winners had a 2-0 lead until late into the match and should have scored a couple more to make it a less interesting affair. With four points, they have put themselves in a strong position to end up at one of the two places that lead to knockout rounds.

However, after two games against Man United, they could be well out of those places.

Zoran Tosic To Play Against Former Club

Zoran Tosic returned to Partizan a couple of years ago, after his time at CSKA Moscow came to an end and he will now face his former team. The player that unexpectedly signed for Sir Alex Ferguson’s Manchester United did not make it at Old Trafford, but has had a very fine career afterwards, mostly playing at a high level for the Russian giants.

Funnily enough, Tosic was without a club and close to leaving football just a year and a half before he joined Man United, further proving that you never know how things will work in football.

Who Are The Interesting Players?

Partizan’s probably the best player is Bibras Natcho, another former CSKA Moscow player. The Israeli international is an experienced central midfielder, with a great footballing brain and he is the one that operates from deep areas. Seydouba Soumah is the one that gets further forward, as a typical number 10, and his form this season has been much better than last year.

These two players, alongside Tosic could be the most dangerous ones, while Umar Sadiq should play up front, with Takuma Asano, former Arsenal player, on the left wing.

The only time these two clubs played in Belgrade it was April 1966 and the hosts won 2-0, before a 1-0 loss at Old Trafford. They progressed to the European Cup final that year, with United finishing their campaign in semifinal.
