Yesterday, we spoke about Manchester United players on international duty that we had the opportunity to see on Thursday and Friday and now it is time to talk about the matches our players featured in on Saturday.
Let’s take a look at how they fared.
Harry Maguire And Marcus Rashford v Bulgaria
First and most important – England. Two Man United players featured for England this Saturday, as they played only their third match in this qualifying campaign. Harry Maguire was the left centre-back, once again, while Marcus Rashford played on the left wing. England won 4-0 against Bulgaria in a cruising fashion, with Harry Kane being man of the match.
Spurs striker scored a hat-trick on the day – although two goals came from the penalty spot – and also added an assist for Raheem Sterling’s goal. Maguire had quite a good game, with Bulgaria not threatening much. Also, Ian Wright spoke after the game about him, as former Arsenal forward said that Man United have paid the premium money to get a player that is worth that money. That sums up his performance quite well.
On the other side of the pitch, Rashford had a good game as well. He made five shots but only one went on target, whilst also adding an important fact that he was fouled for a penalty Kane afterwards converted. His passing was meticulous and overall, it was a good performance to build on.
England now have all three wins in their Group A, which they are topping by a point even though they have played a match less so far.
Nemanja Matic v Portugal
Nemanja Matic, on the other hand, did not enjoy his match as much. The reason for that is that Serbia played against Portugal their crucial match of the qualifiers and they lost it. Serbia hosted Cristiano Ronaldo and the company in Belgrade, but did not earn the points they badly needed.
Matic played the whole 90 minutes, but simply could not stop Goncalo Guedes, Bernardo Silva and others. Serbia managed to get back into the match a couple of times, but never truly had the opportunity to take anything out of this match. Cristiano Ronaldo also scored the third goal for Portugal.
After the match, former Man United player met with Matic, when this interesting thing happened.
So Nemanja Matić just brought his son and his son's friend to meet @Cristiano after the match between Serbia 🇷🇸 and Portugal 🇵🇹.
Ronaldo took his time with the boys and also spoke a little bit with Matić.

While You Are Here
While you are here, we feel like we should share some other information as well.
- Jesse Lingard did not play for England, after he pulled out of England squad due to minor illness. Man United’s energetic attacking midfielder was unable to help his teammates and thus decided to concentrate on getting better.
- Tahith Chong spoke for the media about his decision to stay at Manchester United this summer. TalkSPORT spoke about the two loan offers the player had this summer, but still decided not to go anywhere and stay to develop under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. Chong said he was told his chance will come if he kept working hard and that he felt it was not the best option for him to return to Netherlands and play on loan.
