Media really love linking Manchester United with numerous footballers. Whether that makes sense or not is a different story, what matters is that the Devils are linked with everyone. It brings clicks, it brings retweets and it brings comments.
But sometimes, some stories are truly unrealistic that we simply cannot not pay attention. Man United have a huge army of fans and thus writing about them makes sense from their point of view. Remember all those Cristiano Ronaldo stories last summer? Or the Gareth Bale deal is all done? Well, it looks like that is never ending and this summer window is bringing us more similar stories.
Below are the five players that were, for some reason, linked with Man United. Some of them we would really like to see at Old Trafford, but right now all of them seem highly unrealistic.
Daily Mail report that Manchester United are ready to pursue signing Saul Niguez this summer. From a certain point of view, it makes sense that Saul could be on the move. Man City want him and with Godin and Griezmann moving on from Atletico Madrid, maybe he will feel he could change surroundings too.
But, there are couple of problems. His release clause is quite high, he has a contract until 2026 and why would he change Atletico for Manchester United at this point in time? Atleti have overtaken United in the past decade and even if Saul was to move, he would move to a club in a better situation.
Sky Sports reported Kevin Strootman was offered to Man United and Everton recently. Wow. The Dutchman joined Marseille from Roma last summer for some 20 million pounds and was a huge disappointment, but somehow, media believe Man United could actually go for a soon-to-be 30-year-old with poor injury record and no sufficient quality to start in defence. Even if he was offered to Devils, it just makes things a bit more bizarre.
“Ivan Rakitic has insisted he has no plans to leave Barcelona this summer amid reports Manchester United are trying to sign the midfielder”, Metro claim. And who really reported that in the first place? Why was there ever a thought that Man United could be signing Barcelona’s starting midfielder and World Cup runner-up?
Rakitic will definitely not come to Manchester United, even if he moves from Barcelona. But that also seems unlikely right now. Next summer? Who knows?
Why are we still talking about this? Every now and then there is a quote from Raphael Varane confirming he has absolutely no desire to move from Real Madrid, the club have no desire to sell him, but somehow, he remains to be Man United target, at least in the eyes of media.
World Cup winner and four-time Champions League winner will be staying in Madrid one hundred per cent.
And then there is Isco. The Spaniard had a tough season at Real Madrid, but with the return of Zinedine Zidane, it looks like he could be finding his place in the starting XI once again. The attacking midfielder is a brilliant footballer who will probably stay at Real, as he is simply too good to be offered to anyone. Even if he was, Isco would most probably not make such a stepdown to move to Man United. That is simply reality.
