Are Manchester United That Far Away From Premier League Title?

Manchester United are always in the midst of some kind of storm. Whether it is real or just imagined, the club of such a massive size and enormous fanbase is always interesting to talk about. For one, because people want to read about what is happening at Old Trafford. Therefore, there are plenty of stories about Man United that are being produced for the sake of writing something about Man United.

This time, there are rumours emerging about Zinedine Zidane looking to move to Premier League now that he is out of the job. Of course, the only team mentioned as his ‘favourite club of choice’ is Man United. That might be a compliment from the media, but it is also insinuation that Jose Mourinho will be sacked. However, after all these Mourinho press conferences, poor transfer window and odd relations between important people at the club, no one is actually taking Man United into consideration for a serious title push.

Are the Red Devils really that far behind?

Yes, They Are

This is definitely the case if you ask Paul Scholes.

“When you look at Manchester City, possibly Liverpool, I don’t think they [United] have the quality of those two teams at the minute,” former Man United player told the Daily Mirror.

“I just don’t see United getting closer to City. City are a really good side, great manager, some great players, a way of playing that they all know about and Manchester United seem to be not too sure what’s going on. You don’t really know the team, you don’t really know the players, you don’t know how they’re going to perform from one week to the next.

“So I hope I’m wrong, but I don’t see them challenging for the league this year.”

There are some good points here. United were inconclusive last season, often playing brilliantly one week and then being slow and sluggish the next week, losing points against much weaker sides. With a poor window behind the club, it is hard making a case United are going to be much better than last term.

No, It Is Bloated

However, people often forget the process of working with the players. They can improve over time. This is not a video game where a single player always play at the same level. If that was the case, than how did Jesse Lingard improve so significantly over the past 12 months?

United also had one of the best defences last season and managed to beat top 6 sides on six occasions. With Liverpool often being inconsistent and Tottenham keeping the same team without refreshing it this summer, what is to say these teams are certain to finish above United?

Conclusion

The truth is somewhere in between. Manchester United seem far away from Man City right now, but every other club is too. It is also a bit immature to say City are basically on course towards breaking more records this season after a single round of matches. They might do it, but too often we take conclusions on small samples. Time will tell in the end.
