Matteo Darmian joined Manchester United back in the 2015-16 season. Over that span, Darmian he has amassed 85 appearances across all competitions for The Red Devils. However, that period could be close to come to an end.

The 28-year-old defender will enter the final year of his Manchester United deal this season. So far, there have not been any talks regarding a potential extension. And to make things even more complicated, several teams have already expressed interest in his services. Juventus were tracking him, and now Napoli have joined the race to acquire the former Torino full-back.

The departure of Daley Blind should free up the logjam created on defence, but that shouldn’t affect Darmian’s chances of getting playing time. He is still a back-up behind Antonio Valencia, and opposing teams are open to make a move to bring him back to Italy, especially since he will only cost around €10 million.

Darmian does not have space in the first-team squad anymore

So, it seems the writing is on the wall for Darmian. After all, he only logged 17 competitive appearances under Mourinho last season. That is not enough, especially considering he barely saw action during the final part of the season. It seems his only chance at having a considerable amount of playing time is if Antonio Valencia gets injured.

It is worth noting that Darmian would be strictly confined to a right-back role, though. After all, the left side already has Ashley Young, Luke Shaw and newly-signed Diogo Valot. Valot can also play on the right side if needed, though. So even if Valencia goes down, there is a chance Mourinho opts to play Valot. That would make Darmian’s path to a regular role even more complicated.

With Napoli entering the race for Darmian, Juventus remaining on the market and the player’s wish to get both more playing time and a return to Italy, then parting ways with him before the start of the season would be the best alternative. It seems all parties would be happy with that outcome.

Throughout his career, Darmian has won 36 caps for Italy throughout his career, And if he wants to increase that number, then he needs to left Manchester United as soon as possible.
