Manchester United might be on the verge of a potential midfield crisis down the stretch.
Poor performances from Paul Pogba, the likely departure of Marouane Fellaini and the impeding retirement of Michael Carrick has established the signing of a new midfielder as a priority for the team in the upcoming season. And according to several reports in the local press, there would be quite a few alternatives available going forward.
Names such as Jean-Michael Seri and Sergej Milinkovic-Savic have reportedly been mentioned, but they are not priority for Jose Mourinho. Instead, the Portuguese tactician has identified Toni Kroos and Victor Vanyama as the most likely alternatives to make a move for during the upcoming summer.
What can Kroos and Wanyama bring to the side?
Kroos is a world-class player that everyone knows about. A typical playmaker who excels going forward but isn’t shy to defend, the German international wants new challenges after winning everything with Real Madrid and would be keen to leave Los Merengues quite soon. Manchester United appears as the top alternatives right now, but it’s the only one. England, Spain and even Italy teams are keeping close tabs on the talented midfielder.
The one name that certainly stands out in the list is the one of Wanyama, though. The Tottenham midfielder has always been considered a world-class player and it was clear he was loaded with talent ever since he played for Celtic. But he needed to prove himself on a bigger stage, and that’s exactly what he did in the Premier League. He thrived for Southampton before joining Tottenham, and now is one of the best defensive midfielders in Europe.
United could certainly use someone like him. Someone who’s main job would be to annull opposing playmakers and stand in front of the defensive line. Nemanja Matic does that, but the team doesn’t have any other midfielder with those traits. And needless to say, both teams would form a strong pairing in the middle of the pitch. There is no question that combination would work quite well.
Seri, Milinkovic-Savic and even Jorginho, from Napoli, have also been mentioned as alternatives. But Kroos and Wanyama certainly fit better into what Mourinho wants. Will we see any of them at Old Trafford next season?
