Manchester United won their 29th round match on Monday night in a thrilling fashion, beating Crystal Palace after a big second half comeback. The hosts at Selhurst had a 2-0 lead after just 48 minutes, but Jose Mourinho’s players managed to bounce back and earn an important victory.
Nemanja Matic’s goal in stoppage time earned United a victory that brought them back into second place, in front of Liverpool ahead of their clash on Saturday. Yet, the two easily conceded goals were worrying once again and on Tuesday rumours about Manchester United wanting Samuel Umtiti have emerged once again.
Is That A Possibility?
As Duncan Castles claims, Manchester United want to see what the French centre-back would think of a potential move to Old Trafford. Barcelona’s defender has a release clause of 60 million euros and that would be something Manchester United would definitely be able to pay for him. The question is: is that a possibility?
Talking bluntly, everything is a possibility, but it is really hard to see that happening. A low release clause Umtiti has currently got is because he is still on his original contract signed when he joined Barca from Lyon. That means that he has not got a new deal since he made drastic improvements in his performances, making him one of the world’s best centre-backs.
And there is no doubt about that. Umtiti has shown incredible ability to play at the highest level. As in Spain clubs must put release clause in every players’ contract, they had to put some number in Umtiti’s as well. Since than has passed enough time for everyone to realise that the Frenchman is worth far more money. What that means is that he will either sign a new contract or leave before his contract ends.
Umtiti Will Renew His Contract With Barcelona
The latter part seems highly unlikely. Barcelona are happy with him, he seems happy at Barca and the team is doing well. After beating Atletico Madrid on Sunday, it appears as Blaugrana has already won the La Liga title. They are also in Copa del Rey final, while it remains to be seen how far can they go in Champions League.
There is no reason for Umtiti to leave now. Barca can offer him a huge wages increase through a new contract, but Manchester United’s possible interest seems logical. If they can make Umtiti think about leaving Barca, of course they should do it. Yet, that does not mean that is likely to happen.
In Manchester Umtiti would be a world-class centre-back playing in front of a world-class goalkeeper. He would jump right into the starting XI of Mourinho’s team and be an important part in chasing the Premier League title next season. If he was to come, his technical and physical prowess would be crucial for United’s must needed improvements if the league title is to be chased.
However, it is all just hypothetical. The way he has been playing in the past eight to ten months means that he would be wanted in every top European team. PSG would solve a big problem if he was to go to Paris, Real Madrid would have a great heir to Sergio Ramos as he is getting older, while Bayern Munich, Manchester City and Juventus would all be improved as a whole, too.
Manchester United will not sign Samuel Umtiti this summer. Yet, for this club to think of players of this quality is what is important here. That is necessary when you want to reach the top.
