Manchester United legend and most decorated player, Ryan Giggs, feels the game against Arsenal today is a great opportunity for Marcus Rashford to play through the middle – with the Welshman stating that the number nine role is his favourite position. Rashford scored twice at Old Trafford against Arsenal in 3-2 victory last season, in what was his Premier League debut. United’s number 19 has been forced to play on the flank to accommodate summer signing Zlatan Ibrahimovic.
Giggs feels that Rashford is a fantastic talent, who has a great opportunity to play through the middle against Arsenal today.
We discussed at the start of the season how Jose Mourinho would use the talent of Marcus Rashford throughout the season and it is these types of chances the young striker must take in order to justify his inclusion. With the heroics of David De Gea and the emergence of Anthony Martial last season, Rashford was up there with the highlights of the last campaign.
With Arsenal heading to Old Trafford today, the North London club have not won in the league at United since the 1-0 victory back in 2006/07. United come in off the back of a 3-1 victory over Swansea City two weeks ago, whilst the visitors picked up a point in the 1-1 draw with Tottenham just before the international break. His goals, confidence and dribbling ability lifted the side in what was a very barren season – football wise. The United youngster was extremely unfortunate to be find himself on the bench against Bournemouth on the opening day – following his exploits the season before – however, with Ibrahimovic leading the line in a one striker formation, chances for Rashford were always going to be limited.
Giggs, who revealed he is looking for an ambitious club to manage for this first stint, feels that Ibrahimovic, although a fan, has been the problem in allowing Rashford to play as a number nine – but believes United fans will get a chance to see him play there this afternoon.
“He is a fantastic talent. There has been a slight problem with having Ibrahimovic there obviously. I am a big fan of Zlatan and his goals because I have felt we have lacked goals and characters over the last few years and he brings that.
“But it has been a little bit difficult because of Marcus not playing in his favourite position. But, hopefully, we will get to see him there (against Arsenal).”
