Reports last Thursday suggested that Manchester United were on the brink of signing Anders Lindegaard. A deal has still yet to be confirmed, however in his pre-match press conference on Tuesday, Sir Alex said the deal will “probably happen in the next two or three weeks.” Reports indicate that the fee for Aalesund’s No.1 will be approximately£3.5 million.
While the deal may be completed in the next two to three weeks, Lindegaard will be unable to officially join United until the transfer window opens in January. It is expected that Lindegaard will join in January rather than wait until the summer window. There are some concerns with regards to Lindegaard’s quality, especially after coming under scrutiny from United legend Peter Schmeichel.
The move does raise some questions regarding the goalkeeping situation. Will this be Edwin van der Sar’s final season? Has Tomasz Kuszczak failed to prove himself worthy of being the No. 1? If so, will Kuszczak consequently lead the club? Is Lindegaard meant to be Van der Sar’s heir apparent? The answers to all of these questions still remain quite uncertain.
Even if Van der Sar were to hang up his gloves this summer, the move would provide Lindegaard with six months of learning from one of the best in the game. While not a lot of time, studying under Van der Sar would be invaluable experience.
There is also still talk of Atletico Madrid goalkeeper David De Gea joining United in the summer. Although the Spanish U-21 recently claimed he would be staying put, there is still talk De Gea moving to Old Trafford at the end of the season. While the Lindegaard deal is apparently a sure thing at this point, there is still a lot uncertainty surrounding De Gea.
For now, though, it’s time that we all prepare to welcome our Anders Lindegaard to the United family.
