Manchester United continued their pursuit of a twentieth league championship with a 1-0 victory over Fulham, with Wayne Rooney getting the vital winner. Rooney latched onto to a long punt forward from Jonny Evans and slotted the ball past the helpless Mark Schwarzer. Fulham were far better than they were in the FA Cup match a week ago, and were unlucky in the first half not to take the lead through a Bryan Ruiz left footed shot. Here we take a look at the game’s talking points and welcome comments from both sets of fans.

Manchester United travel to Craven Cottage to play Fulham for the 80th time in the clubs history. United recently beat Fulham 4-1 in the FA Cup and beat the London club 3-2 at Old Trafford earlier in the season, with Robin van Persie getting on the scoresheet for the first time. Fulham were quite poor against United last week and the 4-1 result didn’t reflect the level of dominance by the home side. Here, we look at a view from the opposition, availability and a potential United line up.

A saga lasting close to a year has finally ended, Dimitar Berbatov has been sold by United and will join Fulham for a fee reported to be no more than £4m. The bizarre transfer ordeal saw him set to sign for Fiorentina then Juventus before Fulham stepped in to reunite him with Martin Jol.

Old Trafford hosted its first league game of the season as United played Fulham. The opening round of games had thrown up contrasting fortunes for the two teams with United losing at Everton and Fulham thumping Norwich 5-0. Once again Carrick would have to start at the back with Ferdinand, Evans, Jones and Smalling still out injured. Fans were treated to appearances by two United supporting Olympic champions – Usain Bolt pre-match and Greg Rutherford at half time.

With Fulham full of confidence after their 5-0 opening day win, and with United looking to kickstart the season after Monday’s defeat to Everton, tomorrow’s game should be an exciting, adrenaline-fueled affair. We won 1-0 against them at Old Trafford last season – not a classic performance, but one that was mostly comfortable, apart from the penalty that should’ve been but wasn’t given. However, that game was full of the profligacy that characterised the second half of 2011/12 for United – 21 shots, 9 on target, only one goal. Given Fulham’s own form in front of goal and our well-documented injury worries at the back, we should hope that our attackers are a bit more clinical with their chances this time around.

Despite being a website with content about Man United written by Man United fans – we all happen to not only enjoy football in general, but watch a lot of it. Therefore, we’re trying something new – a weekly column looking at a few learnings and observations from the weekend’s football and not necessarily just in England. A new scribe shall be joining us on this column, Trinidad & Tobago’s finest, Rob. We’ll make no attempt to be neutral and we’ll attempt to link back to United where possible but otherwise enjoy our thoughts and ramblings.

Manchester United’s second game in London in the space of four days saw the champions smash five past a sorry Fulham side. United had not won at Craven Cottage in the league since the 2007/08 season. Since that 3-0 win, United have lost twice (including a heavy 3-0 defeat where Sir Alex was forced to play with Carrick and Fletcher at the back) and drawn one – so an empathic win was overdue. Danny Welbeck, Ryan Giggs, Luis Nani, Wayne Rooney and Dimitar Berbatov scored the goals for United, who are now two points behind Manchester City in their quest for an unprecedented twentieth league title.
