Manchester United 2-2 Fulham: Late drama as United draw
Juan Mata
Juan Mata couldn’t help Manchester United beat Fulham despite setting up the equaliser

In a quite amazing game of football, Manchester United conceded a 94th minute equaliser against a Fulham side, who had led for most of the match. Darren Bent headed home the winner following a parry from David De Gea. Steve Sidwell, who played a major part in the equaliser, opened the scoring when no one picked up his run from midfield and he latched onto Lewis Holtby deep cross.

United then dominated proceedings, despite Fulham nearly scoring on the counter attack just before half time, and were finally rewarded for their efforts when Robin van Persie converted a wayward Juan Mata shot. Two minutes later United were in front, following a left footed strike from Michael Carrick, that took a deflection before leaving a flat footed Stekelenburg helpless.

The home side looked like they’d wrapped up all three points, until Steve Sidwell pounced on soft header from Nemanja Vidic, trying to find Michael Carrick, before playing in Kieran Richardson’s who released a thunderous drive, which was parried away from United’s Spanish keeper into the path of Darren Bent, who headed home to give the visitors a valuable point.

Here we discuss the talking points from the game and welcome comments from both sets of fans.

Robin van Persie scores his first goal for Manchester United against Fulham

Manchester United host Fulham on Sunday, with both sides low on confidence following early FA Cup exists and poor league form. United welcome back Rene Meulensteen, who joined the United coaching staff in 2001 and helped Sir Alex Ferguson win a number of league titles and the Champions League in 2008.

Meulensteen has had a tough start to his managerial career in England, with Fulham rock bottom and no having won a league fixture since New Years day. The visitors have lost ex-United forward Dimitar Berbatov to Monaco and have conceded 53 goals so far this term – the worst in the league. United ran out 3-1 winners earlier in the season at Fulham, with Antonio Valencia, Wayne Rooney and Robin van Persie getting on the scoresheet.

The home side welcome back Nemanja Vidic, who announced earlier in the week he is to leave the club at the end of the season, who is available again after being sent off against Chelsea in January, whilst David Moyes will be looking to Rooney and van Persie to start working with Juan Mata to form an impressive attacking trio. Time is running out for Manchester United, with Liverpool now ten points clear after their 5-1 hammering of Arsenal, and a win against the relegation threatened Londoners is key.

There was much intrigue about United’s trip to Fulham – United’s form has been slowly improving whilst Fulham’s has been rather less good which therefore had all the ingredients for a United-style upset. Carrick and Welbeck missed out through injury as Vidic returned in the league and Jones partnered Cleverley in the middle. We welcome comments from both sets of supporters.

Hey there sports fans. Plucky little upstarts Manchester United take on Martin Jol’s entertaining Fulham side at Craven Cottage this Saturday, on the back of three consecutive wins in all competitions. Coming off their biggest win of the season – a 4-0 League Cup beating of Norwich – United will be hoping to build some momentum in their league campaign after a pretty rotten start. Mr. Moyes has an almost fully-fit squad to choose from; Danny Welbeck is absent after spilling a bucket of Gatorade on his knee. In this fixture last season, only two things happened: 1) the lights went out around halftime, and 2) United won thanks to an excellent Rooney goal. Fulham have a decent record against United in recent years, winning in March and December 2009 and drawing 2-2 in August 2010.

Wayne Rooney scored the only goal for Manchester United against Fulham

Manchester United continued their pursuit of a twentieth league championship with a 1-0 victory over Fulham, with Wayne Rooney getting the vital winner. Rooney latched onto to a long punt forward from Jonny Evans and slotted the ball past the helpless Mark Schwarzer. Fulham were far better than they were in the FA Cup match a week ago, and were unlucky in the first half not to take the lead through a Bryan Ruiz left footed shot. Here we take a look at the game’s talking points and welcome comments from both sets of fans.

Manchester United travel to Craven Cottage to play Fulham for the 80th time in the clubs history. United recently beat Fulham 4-1 in the FA Cup and beat the London club 3-2 at Old Trafford earlier in the season, with Robin van Persie getting on the scoresheet for the first time. Fulham were quite poor against United last week and the 4-1 result didn’t reflect the level of dominance by the home side. Here, we look at a view from the opposition, availability and a potential United line up.

A saga lasting close to a year has finally ended, Dimitar Berbatov has been sold by United and will join Fulham for a fee reported to be no more than £4m. The bizarre transfer ordeal saw him set to sign for Fiorentina then Juventus before Fulham stepped in to reunite him with Martin Jol.

Old Trafford hosted its first league game of the season as United played Fulham. The opening round of games had thrown up contrasting fortunes for the two teams with United losing at Everton and Fulham thumping Norwich 5-0. Once again Carrick would have to start at the back with Ferdinand, Evans, Jones and Smalling still out injured. Fans were treated to appearances by two United supporting Olympic champions – Usain Bolt pre-match and Greg Rutherford at half time.

With Fulham full of confidence after their 5-0 opening day win, and with United looking to kickstart the season after Monday’s defeat to Everton, tomorrow’s game should be an exciting, adrenaline-fueled affair. We won 1-0 against them at Old Trafford last season – not a classic performance, but one that was mostly comfortable, apart from the penalty that should’ve been but wasn’t given. However, that game was full of the profligacy that characterised the second half of 2011/12 for United – 21 shots, 9 on target, only one goal. Given Fulham’s own form in front of goal and our well-documented injury worries at the back, we should hope that our attackers are a bit more clinical with their chances this time around.

Despite being a website with content about Man United written by Man United fans – we all happen to not only enjoy football in general, but watch a lot of it. Therefore, we’re trying something new – a weekly column looking at a few learnings and observations from the weekend’s football and not necessarily just in England. A new scribe shall be joining us on this column, Trinidad & Tobago’s finest, Rob. We’ll make no attempt to be neutral and we’ll attempt to link back to United where possible but otherwise enjoy our thoughts and ramblings.
