How Can Maguire Stay At United Past This Season
Manchester United appear open to retaining Harry Maguire beyond the current campaign, though only under specific conditions. The Sheffield-born defender joined from Leicester City in 2019 for £80 million and was immediately appointed captain, but his time at Old Trafford has been turbulent.
Over the years, Maguire faced criticism and mockery, culminating in Erik ten Hag’s decision to hand the armband to Bruno Fernandes in 2023. However, his fortunes improved following the arrival of Ruben Amorim, who reintroduced him to a back three system. The change revitalised his performances, prompting United to activate a one-year extension in January, keeping him at the club until 2026.
This season, though, Maguire has slipped down the pecking order. He has made six league appearances, starting just twice, with Amorim favouring Leny Yoro, Matthijs de Ligt, and Luke Shaw. His uncertain status has fuelled speculation about a move to the Saudi Pro League in either January or next summer. Yet, journalist Alex Crook has reported that INEOS could still consider keeping him if he accepts reduced wages.
The centre-back earns around £190,000 per week, a figure the club is keen to lower as part of its broader cost-cutting strategy. Even if a pay cut is agreed, Maguire’s diminished importance means he is no longer central to the club’s plans. Nonetheless, his experience could prove useful if United secure European football next season, making a short-term extension a pragmatic option rather than an indulgent one.
Zirkzee Wants To Leave Because Of World Cup
Joshua Zirkzee is reportedly ready to leave Manchester United in January to improve his chances of making the Netherlands squad for the 2026 World Cup. The 24-year-old has not featured for Ronald Koeman’s side since November and has struggled for minutes at club level.
Despite earning six caps and appearing in Euro 2024 and the Nations League, Zirkzee has failed to establish himself this season. He has not started a Premier League match, nor did he feature in United’s early Carabao Cup exit against Grimsby Town. With just 74 minutes of league football and limited rotation opportunities, his prospects appear bleak.
The arrivals of Benjamin Sesko and the flexibility of Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo have pushed Zirkzee further down the order. According to Ben Jacobs, the Dutchman now wants to leave in search of regular football, with PSV reportedly open to a loan deal. Napoli were once interested but have since moved on after signing Rasmus Hojlund.
United are reluctant to sanction his departure, particularly given their £43 million investment. Unless a suitable offer arrives that avoids a financial loss, a permanent move seems improbable. Yet, with the World Cup on the horizon, Zirkzee’s patience is running out.
