After the battering by Fulham in December made it 5 league defeats in the season, Manchester United have responded by dragging themselves back into contention with 6 wins out of 7 in the league to set up a massive eleven days in the clubs season – three away games against in-form, top class opposition will undoubtedly prompt Sir Alex to use the 4-3-3 formation. In doing so, we’ll find out more about the future of Anderson. Should Fergie swallow his pride if it is in the clubs best interests short term?

Manchester United news on goal time

February 7, 2010

Sir Alex Ferguson

One thing we need to take advantage of over here at Stretford-end.com is the amount of statistics that we have at our disposal. After every game, Yolkie and I update our records so that you have the most up to date Manchester United statistics possible. As we are now in the final third of the season (or squeaky bum time – whatever you’d like to call it) I thought we’d run off some statistics regarding when we are at our most dangerous in terms of scoring.

Wayne Rooney has scored more goals than Ronaldo so far

Rooney and Ronaldo

People used to label Cristiano Ronaldo a genius, a phenomenon and our star player – however, I wonder what superlatives are left to throw Wayne Rooney’s way, considering our number ten has already scored more Premier League goals than our old number seven last season.  Rooney has notched up 21 goals, so far, this season where as Ronaldo scored eighteen goals in 32 appearances.  It could even be fair to say that Rooney could reach the feat set by Ronaldo in the 2007/08 season.

February 6th 1958 – lest we forget

February 6, 2010

Busby Babes

52 years ago today a plane carrying the Manchester United team crashed on the third attempt on the snow covered run way of the Munich airport. 23 people who were on the plane died after the crash, including eight Manchester United players. The team were returning to Manchester after a 3-3 draw with Partizan Belgrade and had stopped off in Munich. The tragedy meant that the Busby Babes would never play together again and is ingrained into the soul of the club. Today we remembered our fallen heroes – gone but never ever forgotten.

Manchester United 5-0 Portsmouth Match Report

David James

Premier League Champions Manchester United put beleagured Portsmouth to the sword to return to the top of the table and become top scorers in the division with the best goal difference though the relegation threatened visitors fully contributed to their own downfall with two own goals – making OG the second top scorer for the club this season – and a heavy deflection.

David Gill: United protests ridiculous

February 1, 2010

David Gill

Manchester United’s brown nose chief executive David Gill believes that the planned protests ahead of the AC Milan game in March to be “ridiculous” and that fans should “get behind the team”. Mr Gill was speaking for the first time since the extent of the debt problems was made public in a bonds issue, which had been met with the same ferocious opposition as was in 2005. Gill has taken a monumental U-turn when assessing United’s need for foreign investment and opposed the take over five years ago.

Luis Nani is finally starting to live up to his potential

January 31, 2010

Luis Nani

You’ve seen it before – a right sided player is jockeyed by two players, he performs a ludicrous Cruyff before wrong footing the opposing player and delivers a cross to the far post, which is bundled in by the out of sorts keeper. Garrincha I hear you say? Or perhaps Luis Figo? Nope – Luis Nani today showed the whole world his quality, determination and class by putting on a mesmerising show at the Emirates today.

Arsenal 1-3 Manchester United Match Report

Nani celebrates

In a carbon copy of last season’s Champions League tie at the Emirates – almost down to the goals and the style they were scored – Manchester United destroyed Arsenal in a performance that demonstrated the difference in class between the Champions and the pretenders.

Manchester United 3-1 Manchester City Match Report

January 28, 2010

Wayne Rooney scores

Wayne Rooney’s injury time header finally settled this Carling Cup semi final derby to deservedly send Manchester United to Wembley to defend the trophy. Carlos Tevez had scored to level the tie after Paul Scholes and Michael Carrick had put United into a commanding position but Rooney’s intervention meant a gruelling extra time period was avoided ahead of the weekend trip to Arsenal in the league.
