Two United Players Named In England’s Euro 2024 Squad
England manager Gareth Southgate has announced his final 26-man squad for Euro 2024, a day before the deadline for submissions. Unfortunately for Manchester United, defender Harry Maguire has been excluded from the squad due to a calf injury sustained towards the end of the season. Consequently, Maguire will miss out on this summer’s tournament in Germany. On a positive note for United, Luke Shaw and Kobbie Mainoo have been included in Southgate’s squad. Shaw’s selection is particularly notable given his injury-hit season, but he will travel to Germany as England’s sole recognised left-back.
This tournament will mark Mainoo’s debut at a major international competition, and England will be aiming for a strong performance. In a separate update, Maguire has revealed he is among the players cut from England’s provisional squad for Euro 2026. According to The Athletic, Maguire, along with Manchester City’s Jack Grealish, has been omitted from the squad. The Manchester United centre-back expressed his “devastation” on Instagram, attributing his exclusion to his ongoing calf injury.
United Reject Wan-Bissaka Offer
Aaron Wan-Bissaka is set to leave Manchester United this summer, with interest from Premier League clubs and proposals from across Europe. Reports from Turkey, as relayed by Sport Witness, indicate that Galatasaray have made a €10 million offer for the right-back. Wan-Bissaka, who is entering the final year of his contract at Old Trafford, is expected to be among the players United look to offload this summer.
Despite this, United have reportedly turned down Galatasaray’s initial bid, with negotiations between the clubs still ongoing. Wan-Bissaka, who lost his starting position to Diogo Dalot this season, made 22 Premier League appearances despite being hampered by injuries. It was previously noted Wan-Bissaka’s preference for a move back to London, and he will be hoping for additional interest from other clubs.
Man United Back VAR In Premier League Vote
Manchester United, alongside 18 other Premier League clubs, has voted to retain VAR (Video Assistant Referee) technology. Wolverhampton Wanderers were the sole team to oppose its continuation. The outcome of the vote was confirmed on Thursday, following a collective meeting where all clubs had the opportunity to express their opinions. Wolves had initially spearheaded the call for scrapping VAR, citing frequent adverse decisions that they felt particularly affected them last season. Despite this, the majority of top-flight teams have opted to continue with VAR for the upcoming season. They will be hoping this decision does not backfire. To enact any changes to VAR, at least 14 of the 20 clubs would have needed to vote in favour. While the vote supported keeping VAR, the Premier League has outlined six key areas for improvement to enhance its effectiveness and benefit both games and supporters.
