Fernandes Scores Brace For Portugal
Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes made an impact in Portugal’s 4-2 victory over Finland in a warm-up match for the European Championship. Coming on at the start of the second half at Estadio Jose Alvalade in Lisbon, Fernandes continued his impressive form for Portugal, now boasting 26 goal contributions in his last 19 appearances. Portugal was leading 2-0 at halftime when Fernandes entered the fray. It took him less than 10 minutes to make his mark with a brilliant goal from the edge of the area. Despite a brief comeback attempt from Finland, who scored twice through former Norwich City striker Teemu Pukki, Fernandes added another goal to seal the victory.
This match was Fernandes’ first appearance following a week off after Manchester United’s FA Cup final win over Manchester City. With his brace, Fernandes has now contributed nine goals and eight assists in his last 12 games for Portugal. Since Roberto Martinez took over as manager, Fernandes has been a pivotal player for the national team. The two goals also elevated Fernandes to join Portugal’s top 10 all-time goal scorers, tying with Simao Sabrosa and Nene, each with 22 goals.
Shaw Receives Boost Ahead of Euro 2024
Luke Shaw has made significant progress in his recovery from a hamstring injury and is in contention for a place in England’s Euro 2024 squad. Despite being sidelined since February and missing Manchester United’s crucial end-of-season matches, Shaw is the only natural left-back included in Gareth Southgate’s provisional 33-man squad. Shaw has responded to criticism regarding his commitment to the club by focusing on his return to fitness. According to The Telegraph, he has resumed partial group training while following a tailored individual programme to regain full fitness as swiftly as possible.
United missed Shaw for extended periods this season, and many consider him one of the top left-backs in Europe. Harry Maguire, another United defender, is also working to recover in time for the Euros, which begin in Germany this month. Gareth Southgate has until June 7 to finalise his 26-man squad for the tournament.
