Roberto Alvarado is the latest name to get linked with a potential move to Manchester United. As a young player featuring in the Liga MX, it would be understandable if no one knows too much about him. But here we will present you a bit more info about him, because he would be the latest Latin American player to feature at Old Trafford… if the rumours are true, of course.
First of all.. is he a fit on the current squad?
It is not a secret that Manchester United need two things: defensive depth and a right winger. Alvarado fits the bill for the second position since he’s been playing at RW for La Maquina Cementera during the 2018 Torneo Apertura. However, he is versatile enough to play all over the attacking third, either as a winger or as an attacking midfielder. He could even become a support striker given his keen eye for goal, but right now, he’s better as a winger.
At least position-wise, he would be a fit. That’s a plus.
Is he ready to play in the Premier League?
That seems to be the biggest problem with him. There is no question that Alvarado has lots of talent, but making the jump to the Premier League would be too much. It is one thing to tear it up in the Liga MX, and another to become an impact player at the Premier League level. Alvarado already made his debut with the Mexico national team, and he has everything on his side to become a regular member of El Tri in coming years.
He is also having the best year of his career this term. Playing for Cruz Azul in the Liga MX, Alvarado has three goals and five assists in 12 appearances between Apertura and Copa MX. But the numbers only tell one side of the story. Here are some of his best plays during the 2018/19 campaign thus far.
Should United make a move for him?
Absolutely. Alvarado might only be 20, but he has loads of potential. And while he is a few years away from contributing at the Premier League, it would be wise to move for him quickly. United surely regret not making a move for Hirving Lozano in the past, and Alvarado has a similar potential to the one of the PSV star. Plus, signing him now would prevent from making him even more expensive.
He might not be a name everyone knows about. But there is no question he would be an interesting addition to the current squad.
