Official: Manchester United Sign Nemanja Matic From Chelsea

It took longer than expected, but Jose Mourinho finally has the midfielder he wanted all summer long.

As reported by the team’s official Twitter account, Manchester United have finalised the signing of Nemanja Matic. The Serbian international will sign a three-year contract with the club after both clubs agreed on a transfer fee of around £40 million. There is initial fee of £35 million, and Chelsea could receive £5m more in add-ons.

The former Benfica and Chelsea star will join The Red Devils immediately. In fact, he could take part of the UEFA Super Cup against Real Madrid next Tuesday.

The 28-year-old becomes Mourinho’s third signing of the summer, because the team had already secured moves for Victor Lindelof and Romelu Lukaku, taking United’s summer spending over the £150 million mark.

Mourinho filled his former player with compliments through the team’s official website.

“Nemanja is a Manchester United player and a Jose Mourinho player. He represents everything we want in a footballer; loyalty, consistency, ambition, team player.

“I would like to thank him for his desire to join us because without that, it would be impossible to have him here. I am sure our players and supporters will love him. A big welcome to our new No. 31,” he said.

Matic added: “I am delighted to join Manchester United. To work with Jose Mourinho once again was an opportunity I couldn’t turn down. I have enjoyed my time at Chelsea and would like to thank the club and the fans for their support. I cannot wait to meet my new team-mates and to start training with them.

“This is a very exciting time for the club and I am looking forward to playing my part in creating more history for this great club.”

Matic will use number 31, and he will fight for a starting spotwith Marouane Fellaini and Ander Herrera. However, the former Chelsea player knows the Premier League quite well. He is likely to become a regular first-team player sooner than later.

With the arrival of Matic, now United are waiting to add at least one more attacking player to close the squad ahead of the 2017-18 campaign.
