Manchester United ended 2024 with a whimper, falling to a 2-0 defeat against Newcastle United at Old Trafford on Monday night. It was a match that encapsulated the Red Devils’ struggles, particularly for one player who endured a night to forget.

Newcastle took an early lead when Alexander Isak was left completely unmarked in the centre of the box, nodding home with ease. Moments later, Joelinton scored an almost identical goal, doubling the visitors’ advantage. Despite a more spirited second-half performance, Ruben Amorim’s side couldn’t recover and once again failed to find the net. This club-record-equalling fifth defeat in December raises serious questions. Here are four key takeaways from the match.

United’s Ageing Midfield Struggles

Starting with a duo of Casemiro and Christian Eriksen always seemed risky against Newcastle’s dynamic midfield, and those fears were realised. The pair were overrun by the likes of Bruno Guimarães, highlighting United’s lack of energy and physicality in the middle of the park. Both Casemiro and Eriksen are far from their prime, and their struggles emphasised the urgent need for reinforcements. Newcastle exploited United’s central frailties with ease, and this match was a stark reminder of how threadbare the squad’s midfield options have become.

Zirkzee Hits a New Low

Joshua Zirkzee’s disastrous season reached its nadir in the 32nd minute when Amorim substituted the £36 million striker after a woeful display. Completing just three successful passes, Zirkzee struggled to make any impact and looked out of his depth. The Dutchman left the pitch to boos from the Old Trafford faithful and was reportedly in tears after the game. While it’s harsh to place all the blame on Zirkzee, his performances have not justified the club’s investment, and with Napoli showing interest, a January exit seems increasingly likely.

Mainoo Shines in a Dim Night

Despite the gloom, there was a glimmer of hope in the form of Kobbie Mainoo. Replacing Zirkzee, the youngster immediately injected energy and purpose into United’s play, delivering an encouraging 70-minute display. Mainoo looked much closer to the promising talent who broke through last year. His performance was a rare bright spot and will have given Amorim plenty to consider as he looks to rebuild a faltering side.

Urgent Action Needed in January

Reports suggest Manchester United’s January transfer budget is limited, but INEOS must find a way to provide Amorim with reinforcements. The squad lacks depth, and key components are missing to make Amorim’s system effective. Without new additions, United could find themselves glancing nervously at the relegation zone. The club invested heavily in Erik ten Hag without sufficient returns, and they now need to back Amorim to reshape this underperforming squad.
