Team News

Brentford will have to shuffle their defensive line once again after Sergio Reguilon – who was on loan at Manchester United during the first half of the season – earned a red card at Turf Moor for a last-man challenge. This suspension adds to Thomas Frank’s growing list of absentees, including Kevin Schade (groin), Ben Mee (ankle), Rico Henry (knee), Josh Dasilva (knee), and Aaron Hickey (thigh). Additionally, Christian Nørgaard (back) and Ethan Pinnock (ankle) remain sidelined. On a brighter note for the Bees, Bryan Mbeumo made a brief cameo during the loss to Burnley, marking his first appearance since December following a severe ankle injury. With a two-week international break allowing further recovery, the Cameroonian could be ready to start again.

Manchester United have their own suspension to contend with, as Amad Diallo will sit out after picking up a second yellow card during his euphoric FA Cup goal celebration. While the Ivorian was unlikely to start, key players like Harry Maguire (unspecified), Casemiro (knock), and Lisandro Martinez (knee) face late fitness tests. Altay Bayindir and Jonny Evans are also in doubt, while Luke Shaw (muscle), Anthony Martial (groin), and Tyrell Malacia (knee) remain out of action. Should Casemiro be unavailable, Scott McTominay could once again partner Kobbie Mainoo, who impressed on his England debut.

Form Guide

Brentford’s recent woes continued in a 2-1 defeat to Burnley, where Reguilon’s early dismissal left them fighting with 10 men for nearly the entire match. Despite Kristoffer Ajer finding the net, the Bees were outdone by goals from Jacob Bruun Larsen and David Datro Fofana. This result left Brentford in 15th place, just five points above relegation-threatened Nottingham Forest, and extended their miserable run to five consecutive defeats. Injuries have ravaged Brentford’s squad, particularly in defence, where they have conceded multiple goals in each of their last four matches. Despite facing tough opposition in recent home games – Manchester City, Liverpool, and Chelsea – Brentford have only managed one point from those encounters. However, the Bees remain potent in attack, having scored in 26 of their last 27 Premier League home fixtures, the sole exception being a 1-0 loss to Arsenal in November.

In contrast, Manchester United are finding form at the right time. Their most recent Premier League outing saw them cruise to a 2-0 victory over Everton, keeping them in sixth place, although they remain nine points behind Aston Villa in the race for the final Champions League spot. United also secured a dramatic 4-3 FA Cup win over Liverpool, thanks to Amad Diallo’s extra-time winner, which sets up a semi-final clash with Coventry City. Erik ten Hag’s team have been excellent on the road, winning six straight away games before their derby loss to Manchester City in March. United will be looking to maintain that momentum, with memories of last August’s humiliating 4-0 defeat to Brentford serving as motivation. Since that loss, they’ve beaten the Bees twice at Old Trafford, including a last-gasp 2-1 win in October, courtesy of Scott McTominay’s stoppage-time brace.

Predicted Outcome

Brentford’s home form and attacking trio of Bryan Mbeumo, Ivan Toney, and Yoane Wissa should cause problems for Manchester United’s injury-hit defence. However, Brentford’s own defensive frailties could prove costly against a resurgent Red Devils side. Expect United to grind out another narrow victory, maintaining their knack for one-goal wins – a pattern they’ve repeated in 12 of their 15 league victories this season. This is why this time we will predict a 2-1 win for Manchester United.
