PSG 1-3 Manchester United: Four Things We Learned

Manchester United are back in the Champions League quarter finals! After five years of wait and after a glorious turnaround in Paris, the Devils are amongst Europe’s best. Paris Saint-Germain had everything in their favour going into this match, but in the end they fell to a courageous Man United, 1-3.

Romelu Lukaku scored twice once again, as Juan Bernat’s goal was sandwiched in between. It was still not enough, not until Marcus Rashford scored from the spot deep into the stoppage time to win a match that will be remembered for many years to come.

Ole’s At The Wheel

There is a song about it, there is a hashtag on social media, and there *it* actually is. After so many wonderful results and good wins, this enormous triumph came to top it all of, to do something no team in the history of European football has done – to overturn a two goal deficit away from home.

And you have to start wondering – is this just luck or Ole Gunnar Solskjaer truly is a magician? Man United were incredibly lucky in this match, scoring two goals with the help of PSG and then the third one after a VAR review. But that luck was definitely deserved, as much as PSG’s terrible losses in Round of 16 year after year seem to start becoming a regular occurrence.

Scott McTominay’s Coming Of Age

What a performance this was for Scott McTominay. There were several other magnificent performers on the night, but what he did in the middle of the park was just brilliant. United were forced to start in the middle with McTominay, Fred and Andreas Pereira, a trio you could only see in a meaningless friendly, let alone match of the season.

And that was one of the reasons why so many people did not believe this turnaround could happen. But McTominay was of huge help in achieving that, as he looked like a real presence defensively, tackling everyone and everything, and then even creating attacks from deep in the final stage of the match. This could be a catalyst for some incredible things.

PSG Continue To Disappoint Themselves

They had a 4-0 going to Camp Nou two years ago, they scored in that match and it was still not enough. They had a 2-0 going to play at home, against a team decimated like no other, with 10 players sidelined, they scored again, but it was not enough this time either.

It is hard to feel sympathy for a club heavily backed by a whole country, but PSG have outdone themselves. It was absolutely pathetic how poorly they managed this match, with Kimpembe and Kehrer having shockers in the backline.

Victor Lindelöf Could Be Man United’s Player Of The Season

Let’s be short here. Victor Lindelöf has grown into Man United’s best, most complete centre-back right now. His performance was perfect in Paris, as plenty of them were in recent months. In fact, you could argue he is one of only maybe two players (if you include Luke Shaw) that did not have a season which could be split into two halves, the way Paul Pogba did, for example.

Maybe that will be enough for the award. We just hope he will continue growing like he grew at Parc des Princes.
