The March international break is a good opportunity for everyone to pause a little bit and take a look at things from a different perspective. There are no Manchester United matches for the next 10 days and looking back would be a good thing to do, as part of the plans for the future.

Manchester United are close to finishing second in the Premier League and could win the FA Cup if they win the final two matches in the competition. They have lost in League Cup quarterfinals to Bristol City and to Sevilla in the Champions League round of 16. So this season has been a season of slow progress. It was better than last term, but not good enough for a club like Manchester United. Here are some things that the club need to do before the 2018-19 season kicks in.

Install A Sporting Director

This is a tough one, mostly because of a strong-willed manager in the dugout. It is hard to imagine a sporting director working with Jose Mourinho right now. He would like to have the freedom of being able to bring in players he wants and the club are not 100% ready to do that.

As Ed Woodward has proved in recent years with his transfer market business, he is not a good solution for that position. So a proper sporting director should be installed to work with Jose Mourinho in bringing in new players. What that would offer is a long-term stability, that there will be someone looking for the years ahead, not just for the short-term plans the manager might have. That is how the greatest clubs operate and Manchester United really should not be staying behind in that regard anymore.

Overhaul The Back Line

This one is a bit more obvious. There are too many players in this side that are not up to standards of this club. Matteo Darmian will be leaving this summer, Daley Blind will be on the doors out as well, while Chris Smalling and Phil Jones have really regressed during this season.

With Luke Shaw getting ready to leave after another public criticism from Mourinho and Valencia and Young being in their thirties, there will be plenty of work to do. At least one player in each of the three defensive positions will be needed this summer if United are to truly fight for the Premier League title.

Keep David De Gea

This is the most obvious one, but it is a crucial one. David De Gea is the best shot-stopper in the world and this season has been probably the best amongst the keepers. He is such a valuable asset to this team and he could well go on to once more become player of the season. Without him, Man United would have won less often and that needs to be kept at Carrington.

This summer Real Madrid might try and get him after the World Cup. Keylor Navas is rumoured to be leaving the Spanish capital and if that is the case, everyone with a great goalkeeper should be worried. Manchester United are among those clubs and, who knows, De Gea might be even tempted to join the current European champions.
