Report: Manchester United Close To Sign Star Midfielder From Chelsea

Nemanja Matic could join Manchester United player by the end of the week.

And in fact, that signature could come any minute now. According to a report from The Guardian, Matic agreed to join Old Trafford’s side this Monday. The transfer fee would be around £40 million, but it seems he’s worthy of the price tag in Mourinho’s eyes. The Portuguese tactician already signed him for Chelsea back in 2014, and now is keen to have him once again.

Transfer Set To Be Completed

Matic, who will earn around £155,000 a week, is expected to undergo the routine medical exams in the coming days. Even though Mourinho is in Portugal due to his father’s death, the midfielder is expected to become a United player before the club travel to the United States for a pre-season tour that starts on July 9. We already covered what his potential arrival might mean for United,  but the deal is close to be completed, so now we can get a closer look to him.

Similar to Fabinho, Matic has been linked with a move to United ever since the season ended. Despite the fact he was an important part of Chelsea’s title run, Matic wants to work with Mourinho again. He played most of the season under Antonio Conte’s management, but it wasn’t the same for him, apparently. And the fact that he had to compete with Cesc Fabregas throughout the entire season probably unsettled him a bit.

Where Would He Play?

Things would be different in United. Mourinho loves hard-working players such as Matic, so there is no question he would likely become a starter from the first day of the season. He would be quite an upgrade over Marouane Fellaini. And Matic would fit in nicely next to either Ander Herrera or Michael Carrick.

Matic also offers some interesting versatility to United’s midfield. He’s far more comfortable on the centre of the pitch, but we have seen him on other roles as well. He can play behind two technical midfielders, or in front of two defensive ones. Everything depends on how Mourinho wants to organise the midfield. But we can pencil Matic as a starter as soon as he signs the deal.

With Matic set to sign, Manchester United already have two major signings since Victor Lindelöf joined the team as well. They are not world-class signings by any means, but there is no question both players improve the side. And Matic should have an important role within the squad considering how good he was for Chelsea last season.
