Manchester United’s Reserves are travelling to Ireland for two friendly matches as part of their pre-season. Today, on Monday 23rd July they take on Longford Town (who currently have former United player, Keith Gillespie on their books) and Cork City on Wednesday 25th July. Irish journalist, Alan Smith, has kindly forwarded on the squad list which includes some interesting names.

The full travelling squad is:

1 Jonathan Sutherland
2 Luke Hendrie
3 Michele Fornasier
4 Sean McGinty
5 Luke Giverin
6 Reece James
7 Gladestony
8 Agnaldo
9 Charni Ekangamene
10 Adnan Januzaj
11 Tom Lawrence
12 Jack Barmby
13 Mats Daehli
14 Donald Love
15 Kenji Gorre
16 Jack Rudge
17 Joshua King
18 Gyliano van Velzen
19 James Robinson
20 Larnell Cole

Immediately the two Brazilian players stand out. Both presumably are on trial from Desportivo Brasil although Gladestony has spent the last year on loan at FC Twente in Holland – United are rumoured to own him although nothing was ever confirmed.

Various players from the U18s are included: Sutherland will almost certainly play a big part in the Reserves this season with Amos out on loan and the departures of Coll and Jacob. Hendrie, Rudge, Gorre and Love all make the step up alongside the exciting young trio of Daehli, Januzaj and Barmby.

There’s a first chance for United fans to get a look at new signing, Reece James, who joined from Preston. He’s the younger brother of former Untied player, Matty, and turns 19 later this year. Larnell Cole’s inclusion is positive as he works his way back from an injury that prevented him joining the first team on tour. Sean McGinty is set to join Oxford United on loan after this trip.

Finally, a mystery “James Robinson” is included. The date of birth provided suggests he’s 26 although I’ve no idea who this could be. It may be sensible to presume he’s a back-up keeper otherwise Sutherland is the only guy on the trip.

  1. Hi Doron,
just for the record, United don’t own Gladstony. Last season he was on loan from Desportivo at FC Twente. Manchester United have contract with FC Twente and Desprotivo, which states, that if United are interested in Gladstony, they have first option on. Nothing more. But FC Twente weren’t satisfied with the progress Gladstony made last season. Never came close to their first team. Played only for their Reserves. That’s why I so surprised he’s in the Reserve squad travelling to Ireland.
