Wayne Rooney requests transfer

Wayne Rooney has requested to leave Manchester United.

Sir Alex Ferguson confirmed the news at the press conference before the Bursaspor game, saying, “His agent has intimated he won’t sign a contract and wants away. It’s a shock”.

The United manager admitted he was “shocked” and “disappointed” to hear the news and that he had not fallen out with United’s top scorer from last season. Fergie was quoted as saying:

“We are as bemused as anyone can be, we can’t quite understand why he would want to leave. I was in the office on 14 August and David phoned me to say he (Rooney) wasn’t signing a contract. I was dumbfounded. Only months before he was saying he was at the greatest club in the world. I asked to have a meeting with the boy. He reiterated what his agent said, that he wanted to go.”

Sir Alex also revealed that the door is still open for Rooney to change his mind.
